Tips on Working from Home

Find out how to make the most out of working from home!

Advertisements

As someone who is constantly working from home, I’ve been able to figure out how to make the most out of my day. Most people think it’s working in your pjs from bed all day, but that’s definitely not the case. For me, a lot of thought is put into working from home because it’s THAT easy to curl right back up in bed.

I’ve tried sitting in bed all day working to get my task list checked off, and let me tell you now, it doesn’t work. I’ve also tried sleeping in and working later, but that wasn’t ideal either. In order to get my work done I need to wake up earlier, start my morning off with a boost of energy and tackle a to-do list one by one. Here are the ways that I get all of my work done at home.

Wake Up Early

This might mean something different to you, depending on when you usually get up, but for me it means 8 to 8:30am. I find that setting my alarm even an hour later than this (9am) prevents me from getting up right away. Being up with the rest of my household at 8am encourages me to make my bed, change my clothes and start the day.

Workout Right Away

I used to convince myself I couldn’t do this because I’d wake up hungry, too tired, etc, etc. However those were excuses and I’m glad I’ve put an end to them because working out as soon as I’m awake gets my blood flowing and helps me be more productive. Once the workout is over I can focus the rest of my day on what’s important. It doesn’t need to be a long workout, even 20-30 minutes will do you good!

Shower

If you workout you should probably shower too, but this is a win-win situation. If your sweat sesh didn’t wake you up, then a shower surely will! You’ll also be ready for the day in case you need to go out.

Prepare a Checklist

I find that physically writing down my to-do list the evening before really helps me to get things done the next day. Whether it’s on my whiteboard or a notebook, being able to prioritize and actually check things off throughout the day allows me to get more done. I also write down ideal times for getting things done, see my example below.

8am – wake up, workout, shower

9am – emails

10am – content creation for (brand)

Make Your Own Schedule

Every work shift has a start and an end time, so I try my best to do that for my own schedule too. If I’m waking up at 8am, having a workout, lunch break or running errands, then I’ll end my day around 5-6pm. However, in this industry your work is going on 24/7, so you just need to know when to stop answering your emails 😉 Knowing how to do this comes in handy when you have family or significant-other time planned.

I hope these tips help you get more done while working at home! If you have any other suggestions for increased productivity and organization please share them in a comment below! 🙂

The Blog Series: Comparing & Confidence

Have you ever compared yourself to someone on social media? Compared your life to theirs? Even compared the type of day you had to the day that they showed they had on IG? I have too, but I’m learning to stop comparing and instead be confident in what I’m doing because everyone is on their own journey and on a different chapter of their life. For this month’s Blog Series post I want to focus on the importance of being confident about one’s own work and content because I feel that it’s a big part of being successful in this industry. Not only that though, it also keeps us sane and true to ourselves. We all know how influential social media can be, so let’s start this conversation now.

Comparing ourselves to others, straight up, is not healthy. In fact it’s almost poisonous because we can get so caught up in what we’re not that we start to lose sight of who we are and what we already have. It pushes away any ounce of appreciation that we have for what we’ve been dealt! Let’s face it though, social media makes it so easy to be sucked down the black hole of comparison, so how do we prevent it?

I believe that when we lack self confidence we begin to compare ourselves to others. If one is truly confident then there’s no need to compare. At least that’s what I find personally when I’m going down that dark path. Instagram is the biggest culprit because although an image is worth a thousand words, 9/10 times it’s not the full picture. It’s posed, cropped, filtered and usually staged, so why do we feel the need to tell ourselves it’s real?

When I begin to compare myself or my work to someone else I try my very hardest to take a step back, put my phone away for a while and think about what I’m proud of myself for. It sounds conceited but when you’re in that state of mind, it’s really up to you to pull yourself out of it and realize that 1) you’re ENOUGH, 2) you have your own achievements to be proud of and 3) you should always choose collaboration over competition.

Confidence matters in more ways than you can imagine. It allows you to create to your full potential, work with others better and gets you noticed easier. The creative industry is about being yourself and showing your own unique creativity. It wouldn’t be any fun, or interesting for that matter, if everyone was doing the exact same thing. Be confident in the way that you pose, style, create, write, film and edit! You’ll save yourself a whole lot of time by not comparing yourself to others and being confident in your own skin.

I want to know what your thoughts are on this. Whether it’s a DM on Instagram, an email or a comment below I want to chat with you!

The Best Products for Clogged Pores

Summer has been hitting us hard with the humidity lately, especially in Vancouver, which means that the quality of our air isn’t as great as it could be and our skin is suffering in one way or another. The skin issue that bugs me the most is clogged pores because one, they cause unwanted tiny bumps on my face and two, they’re the worst surface to put makeup on (specifically matte products and highlighters).

When I run into this skin concern I use two very specific products and they seem to work pretty well! The morning after I use them my existing blackheads are gone and almost completely closed and the pores that were so open before are barely visable. Note: I have combination skin, the oiler parts being between my brows, nose and chin which is where most of my blackheads appear.

The first step to unclogging my pores is using a Micellar water. This helps remove leftover makeup and bacteria as well as provides a deep cleanse for my skin. The one that I’ve been using non-stop lately is the Bioré Charcoal Cleansing Micellar Water. The charcoal actually helps to reduce oiliness so it’s a win-win for me! I simply apply this water to a cotton pad and wipe it all over my face. They say that you don’t need to rinse after using this product but I actually prefer to when I have more clogged pores than usual.

Next up I like to use pore strips on my nose because that’s where most of my blackheads reside. I’ve probably tried 10 different brands of nose pore strips by now but the Bioré ones have proven to work the best for me. I really like the Charcoal Pore Strips because again, they pull out excess oil.

After I complete these two steps I apply my regular skincare routine and try not to wear makeup for a couple days!

What do you do to unclog your pores? Which products work the best for you? Please comment them below!

My Favourite Summer Looks

Every season brings a wave of new looks and this summer I’ve been seeing some of my favourite looks of all time! No joke. The trends that have surfaced this summer can be worn in their own unique ways, they’re not too over the top and are all affordable!

Below are my five favourite styles of the summer featuring some of the bloggers on IG that inspire me the most! Swipe over each photo for their Instagram handles! 🙂

Chunky Sneakers & Dresses

Pairing chunky sneakers with a mini dress have turned out to be one of the hottest looks this season. Who would’ve thought that these two completely opposite items could compliment each other?! If you’re not up for the full on chunky foot then you can try out platform sneakers instead.

Blazers & Shorts

This look brings a whole new vibe to shorts AND blazers! I personally love an oversized pair of shorts with a light boyfriend styled blazer.

Two Piece Sets

There’s nothing easier to pair than a matching set, am I right? 😉 Whether it’s monochromatic or floral, two pieces have proven to be an it item this summer.

Smocked Tops & Denim

This trend brings me back to the times when I would wear smocked dresses all summer long as a little girl. Smocked tops pair really well with denim which makes them super easy to style! They’re also usually one of the pieces that actually help keep you cool when it’s hot!

Tie Tops & Puff Sleeves

I love this tie top trend so much that I bought two of them in almost the exact same style! LOL. One is eyelet and the other is solid white 😉 I personally like this type of top in white because it can be worn in so many different outfits. Denim shorts, jeans and skirts all pair really well with tie tops.

Which one is your favourite trend of the summer?

How to Achieve the Perfect Summer Tan

Summer is at its prime so there’s no better time to tan than now! If you’re looking to achieve that perfect glow-y tan, no sunburn or peeling involved, then I’m here to help you out. Sitting out in the sun can enhance the natural beauty of your skin but in the same amount of time, if done incorrectly, can leave you with some nasty blisters and peeling. Nobody wants that, so today I’m sharing how I achieve the perfect summertime glow and how I avoid those bad burns.

Exfoliate

If you exfoliate your body, even with a simple scrub, your skin will be smooth and clean for a good tan. Dead skin on the surface of your body makes it easier for your tan to peel, especially if you get a sunburn! Try to exfoliate a day or two before you go out to tan.

Apply Sunscreen

Even if you don’t think you burn, applying sunscreen does more than just avoid redness! Sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful rays and can even prevent skin cancer. I like to apply one layer before any tanning oil just to be safe.

Use Hydrating Oils

When you’re choosing an oil to tan with, make sure that it’s hydrating because the sun really sucks out any moisture that your skin has. I really like the Bali Body tanning oils because of their hydration.

Use Dark Oils

I prefer to use dark oils because I feel that they give me a deeper tan. The one that I’ve been using lately is the Bali Body Cacao tanning oil. It’s hydrating, smells like cacao and results in the prettiest glow!

Moisturize Religiously

The real trick to keeping your tan locked in place is moisturizing. Right after you shower and wash off your sunscreen and oils make sure that you moisturize your skin with a good amount of cream. This prevents the skin from flaking and the tan from fading.

If you get a sunburn…

While I was in Mexico I actually got a minor sunburn on my nose and cheeks, but it disappeared within two days because of one thing, my La Mer Cool Gel Cream. I suggest investing in a cream that works beneath the skin to reduce redness and sensitivity because you’ll need it if you burn, even a little bit. I applied this cream to the tips of my shoulders as well because that’s where I tanned the darkest and I didn’t want to peel and it worked!

Mexico Travel Diary

Last week I went on my very first vacation to Mexico and it was a wonderful and much needed get-away. My family and I stayed at the 5-Star Iberostar Resort in Playa Mita and although I haven’t been to many resorts, I can say that this was definitely one of the best I’ve seen. It truly felt like a 5-Star experience, especially because it was all-inclusive. Below are the highlights of my trip and experience at the resort. Hopefully if you haven’t been to Mexico before this will convince you to book your next vacation there 😉 It is seriously beautiful!

FOOD

Let’s talk about what’s important first, the food! 😛 Since this resort was an all inclusive, anywhere we went we were able to order food and drinks without having to worry about holding money. There were two buffet style restaurants, one was extremely large and the other was a little smaller and closer to the pool. I expected the food to be sub-par as it was buffet style and all-inclusive, but the food was AMAZING! This definitely made our trip more enjoyable because the variety of food was very wide too. Everyday around noon one of the chefs would come out to the mini poolside hut and make either burgers, hotdogs, tacos or paella.

The highlight of my food experience here was the Japanese Teppanyaki. Honestly, I was nervous to eat sushi while in Mexico but it turned out to be very delicious and the show that our chef put on was marvellous!

SERVICE

The staff at the resort were all very helpful, friendly and involved! Majority of our days were spent poolside and there were always activities going on which made it super fun, especially for the younger kids. A few of the activities that went on during the day were water aerobics, salsa and meringue dance, biking, water volleyball, beach volleyball, and many more. The staff would even go up to everyone poolside and let them know what activities were happening next. This might seem easy but the resort was HUGE so it was a nice gesture for them to remind us what was going on.

Processed with VSCO with h4 preset

The only service that disappointed me was room service. The very first time I ordered, a simple plate of chicken nuggets and fries and a brownie dessert, we waited 2 hours and then ended up cancelling it completely because it was getting too late. However when my cousin and her boyfriend ordered the exact same thing on a different night, theirs came in 15 minutes! So clearly there’s a bit of inconsistency with the room service timing.

ENTERTAINMENT

This resort went above and beyond to provide amazing entertainment for all of its guests. Each evening there was a show in the theatre either in concert form or music/lip-syncing performance. The shows that we watched were themed Boogie Nights, Rock, Pop Love Songs and Las Vegas and they were each about an hour and a half long. The singers, dancers and band were extremely talented and every show was put on very well!

Processed with VSCO with a10 preset

In addition to the shows, on a few of the evenings before the show times there would be a set up in the lobby with games and drinks that corresponded with whatever theme that nights show would be. On one of the evenings it was Mexican festival themed so there were multiple traditional games going on and a booth dedicated to tequila 😉 Another evening was Las Vegas themed so they had a “make your own cocktail” stand and poker games all around the lobby.

VENUE

As soon as we walked into the lobby we were in awe of how beautiful the resort was and I really appreciated their attention to detail in the design. Throughout the entire building there were gorgeous pieces of furniture, light fixtures and art making it really feel like a 5-Star building. The views of the ocean were insane and at sunset there was enough seating and viewing points for everyone to watch. The pools were in the centre of the resort but a little closer to the beach so that there was easy access if you wanted to go down for a dip in the ocean.

Overall my stay at Iberostar was unforgettable and a fantastic first impression of vacationing in Mexico. I would 100% go again! If you have any specific questions regarding the resort please don’t hesitate to comment or contact me here!

Product Review: La Mer Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream

I never thought that I would ever get to review or even put on a $315 face cream, but here I am ladies and gents and let me tell you, it feels luxurious. My skincare collection just went from a 7/10 to a 15/10 just because of this one product, hah!

The La Mer products have always been the type of skincare that I dreamed of owning, but last month I was reached out to for their Vancouver event and that’s how I got my hands on this product! Unfortunately I ended up having to go on a last minute work trip and missed the event, but a girlfriend of mine was able to snag my goodie bag anyway 😉

I’m so happy she did because otherwise I probably wouldn’t have been trying this cream for a few more years (aka when I could afford the luxury). Enough of my chatter though, let’s get into this review!

LM_SKU_5R0701_85317_680x680_1

Texture & Feel

The first time that I applied this cream I put on way too much and quickly realized that a little goes a long way. The texture of the cream is silky smooth (no exaggeration here) and literally glides on and sinks into the skin. It’s also feather light which makes it great for daily wear under makeup.

LM_SKU_5R0701_85317_680x680_2

In Combo with Makeup

I’ve only been wearing this cream in the daytime, both with and without makeup to really see how it works and benefits the skin. Without makeup it actually smooths the skins appearance and hydrates throughout the entire day. With makeup it creates an amazing canvas for BB cream, what I use daily, and doesn’t affect the oiliness of my skin. This is something that really impressed me, but I guess because it’s such a light gel cream, it works well with other products!

Benefits for the Skin

Since using this I have seen a change in my skin in terms of pores, glow and texture. The pores around and on my nose have visibly reduced in size creating a smoother appearance. Also, my skin feels much more hydrated and definitely looks like it, increasing my daily glow! 🙂

LM_SKU_5R0701_85317_680x680_3

Thoughts on Price Point

I’m in no position to be spending $315 on a 2oz container of moisturizer but if I were I honestly think that this might be worth the money! In under a week I’ve already seen how well the cream works so I’m sure that using it long term would really show great results. Not to mention, the ingredients that are used in this product are fermented which is pretty impressive and I’m sure it adds to the price point.

Have you babes tried any of the La Mer products? I would love to know what your faves are if you have! Comment your thoughts below 🙂

The Eyeshadow Palette That I’m Loving Right Now

It’s easy to buy every eyeshadow palette that catches your eye, but it’s even better to find one that contains every colour that you might need! I recently recieved a palette that is now my go-to on a daily basis from the am to pm, it’s got every shade that I’ve ever wanted to try. From the neutral matte tones to sparkly pigmented finishes this palette creates endless possibilities for some really beautiful looks.

I’ve never been a big user of colourful eyeshadow but I’m starting to realize that experimenting here and there isn’t so bad. Whether it’s a darker colour in the crease or something colourful on my waterline, colour can take your look from a 5 to a 10!

By now you’re probably dying to hear what this palette actually is so….drum roll please…The palette that I’m obsessing over right now is the brand new Born to Run palette from Urban Decay! Who guessed it correctly? 😉

3605971775871_borntorun_alt2.jpg

For me this palette has every colour that I’ll ever need and I say that because I’ve been trying to find a really great mix of copper and red tones as well as turquoise and purples for a long time now and this palette has them all! Not only that but the colours within the top row all work really well together to create a more neutral daytime eye.

The shadows are highly pigmented, stay on all day, and don’t cause fallout! I haven’t tried working with the turquoise and purples yet but I’m considering doing a YouTube get ready with me video using them. Comment below if that’s something you’d like to see! 🙂

What do you babes think of this palette? I love that it’s not too expensive ($59CAD) and that the Born to Run collection has glide on eye pencils that match really nicely with these shades.

It’s available on the Urban Decay website or at Sephora right now!

More to come on this Born to Run line my loves! Stay tuned for my Born to Run looks using the entire collection!

5 Ways To Stay Organized While On Vacation

An enjoyable vacation for me is always well planned and organized. I find that when I don’t have to worry about putting together outfits or planning my days I’m much more relaxed! This does take some extra organization beforehand, but it’s definitely worth it. Scroll down to read my tips on staying organized while on vacation!

  1. Plan ahead of time. It sounds obvious but most people don’t do this! I like to plan my trips at least three months ahead of time so that I have a set schedule by the time I head to the airport. This includes booking flights, booking hotels or Air BnBs, transportation within my destination (unless it’s Uber), and an activity itinerary!
  2. Create detailed itineraries. It’s easier to write down a list of attractions and events you want to visit while on your vacation, but it’s better to plan the dates and times that you actually want to go. I always create a detailed itinerary for each vacation that I go on because it eases my mind before travelling and let’s my brain relax when I get to my destination. The details of these itineraries include date, time, method of transportation and the amount of money I assume I’m going to need for food and shopping. I’ve created a template that you can use for your next vacation itinerary too! -> VACATION ITINERARY TEMPLATE
  3. Buy tickets early. To avoid long lines and sometimes higher prices I always buy tickets for events or attractions before I travel!
  4. Brainstorm outfit ideas. Outfits are probably the biggest deal for me, but I’m not ashamed! I love feeling good in what I’m wearing, especially on vacation. I’m definitely not the type to let go of my style when travelling so I always plan every single outfit early. I create mood boards on Pinterest and Instagram that include the style that I want to portray on vacay and then I execute! I plan everything from head to toe (accessories, clothing, shoes) and write it all down in a chart. This way I can avoid overpacking and when I’m actually on vacation I don’t have to worry about pairing pieces!
  5. Use packing cubes. I only recently started using packing cubes but WOW are they a life changer. They make life SO much easier when travelling!! I categorize each cube into shirts, pants, undergarments, swim suits, pyjamas and toiletries and it saves me so much time when unpacking and looking for items.

The Blog Series: My Favourite Photo Editing Apps

Editing photos is a very personalized activity and depends solely on the aesthetic that you’re trying to capture and create. With that being said, there are tons of apps out there that can help you achieve the look that you want, but it can be difficult finding the best ones for you so today I’ll be sharing which ones I love!

My editing process has changed quite a bit since my last post on this topic and also throughout the growth of my Instagram page, which I think is due to changes in my own personal style and aesthetic. What’s great about these apps though is that you can really do whatever you want with your photos. If you want to change up your Instagram page or blog, it’s as simple as a tap or swipe of a button!

At this stage I would describe my Instagram page as neutral, warm and simplistic. I always use the same filters but the editing process in regards to brightness, ambience and all other aspects differs from photo to photo. Let’s get started!

Before & After

Step 1: Snapseed

I use this app to adjust the little details of a photo such as brightness, ambience, highlights, shadows, structure and sharpening. Out of all of the apps I’ve tried, this one seems to be the best in terms of quality of the image after all of the edits have been completed.

Step 2: VSCO

This is the app that I use to adjust the filter and temperature of my images. Right now the only filter I’m using on VSCO is M5 which gives a nice warm and natural look. I usually create a preset of this filter along with the desired temperature so that my photos look the same.

IMG_2934

Step 3: Afterlight

This is the app that I use to apply the dusty look to photos. I don’t use it often but when I do I test out all of the dust filters to find the one that best suits the photo!

Voila! My image is complete! If you have any questions about the process or these apps feel free to comment below!
