My Current Daytime Skincare Routine

Here’s what I use on the daily to keep my skin healthy and glowing!

Advertisements

It’s been a while since I’ve shared my update skincare routine, so today I’m laying it all out for you. I’ve been struggling a bit with acne recently so I’ve switched over to some products that are helping to control it. In addition, I’ve been using some products that help with the texture and enlarged pores. Let’s dive in shall we?

#1 Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser

This is the cleanser that I’ve been using to combat incoming acne and pimples that have already surfaced. It has salicylic acid which is a chemical exfoliant and helps to break down impurities!

#2 Sunday Riley Good Genes

To get rid of my acne scars I’ve been using the Good Genes because it has Lactic Acid. It exfoliates the skin and helps to unclog pores, even out texture and reduce dark spots. I’ve found that after using this for even just a month my scars have lightened quite a bit.

#3 Swiss Line Recovery Serum

Basically this serum helps to revive the skin. So whether it’s because I’ve been out drinking too much or maybe eating poorly during the week, this serum improves my skin’s self-renewal. The signs of fatigue and stress are much less visible!

#4 Swiss Line Perfection Booster

This is a booster that I mix in with the Recovery Serum. It has 10% lactic acid which again helps to exfoliate the skin. Basically this booster helps to resurface and smooth skin texture and reduce the size of my pores.

#5 DecortΓ© Overnight Performance Cream

This cream hydrates, lifts and firms my skin. A little bit goes a long way and I love it because my skin feels so moisturized when I wake up! The ingredients in it help the skin to look more youthful and bouncy over time.

#6 Summer Fridays Jetlag Mask

Under my eyes I use the jetlag mask because out of all the eye creams I’ve tried, this one truly helps to reduce puffiness and darkness when I’m extremely tired.

#7 Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

I don’t remember the last time I had chapped lips and this sleeping mask is why! It’s super thick and smells amazing. It keeps my lips super hydrated and plump.

What are some skincare products you’re loving right now?

My Current Skincare Routine: AM & PM

As you know, my skincare routine changes almost every month and over the past few weeks I’ve been on a routine that has done wonders for my face. A couple of the products I’ve been using are newer to me, but they truly work and I’m super happy with my results. My newer products are from The Body Shop’s “Drops of Youth” line. I was introduced to this line about mid-January and have been using them day and night ever since.

A skincare routine for me consists of serums, moisturizers, eye creams, lip products and face wash. Since I have combination skin, it’s often difficult to find a balance between all of those products and find something that works for every part of my face. Luckily with the products I’m using now, my skin is looking and feeling amazing.

A routine that works for me tightens my pores, rids my blackheads, keeps my skin feeling hydrated, prevents breakouts and improves the texture (smoothness) all around. Enough of the chit chat though, below are the products I’m using and loving.

Morning Routine

Face Wash: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser

Serum: Alumier MD EverActive C&E Serum

Moisturizer: Drops of Youth, Youth Cream

Sunscreen: Coola Sun Silk Drops (SPF 30)

Evening Routine

Face Wash: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser

Serum: Drops of Youth, Youth Concentrate

Moisturizer: Drops of Youth, Youth Cream

Eye Cream: Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

Lips: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

None of the content in this post is sponsored however products were gifted to me a while back. Most of the skincare I use is gifted, and that’s only because I hate to waste what I receive! When I recommend products, I genuinely am using them and loving them. These are the ones that are on heavy rotation atm.

How Often You Should Get a Facial

Many factors come into play when getting a facial; your skin type, conditions, age and budget. I am certainly not a derm or a professional in the skincare industry, but I have had my fair share of facials and I’ve been able to chat with a lot of different estheticians in the process. Therefore I wanted to share the knowledge I’ve learned from these skincare professionals!

If you’re already using a good selection of products in your skincare routine (not your average drugstore products) then your skin is probably in better condition than you think. Facials, however, are a fantastic way to give your skin a boost. After all, your skin is a living organ πŸ˜‰

Without getting too scientific here I want to explain why facials are good for your skin. Basically the cells within your skin move up to the surface every 30 or so days and they “die”. These are those “dead skin cells” that your dermatologist and estheticians always talk about. So there you have it, every month you should be getting a facial!

There are other factors that will affect how often you should get a facial though, as I mentioned above. Your skin type (dry, oily, combo, sensitive, normal) will affect this. I personally have combination skin so I should be going every month, or maybe every 3 weeks because there is more to clear out in terms of blackheads and clogged pores. Dry and normal skin are totally fine to get facials every month or even every 5-6 weeks and people with sensitive skin might consider going less often to prevent reactions and irritation.

The type of facial you’re getting will also affect how often you should be going. There are many different types of facials out there; chemical peels, hydration facials, light therapy, etc. If you switch up the types of facials you’re getting then you may be able to go more often, or even wait longer between each one. Definitely ask your esthetician the next time you get one!

Lastly, age and budget will affect how often you should be getting facials. Younger people have an easier time generating new cells therefore we don’t need to go as often as people with less collagen growth. Budget is a huge factor because facials can get quite pricey and unless you’re purchasing bundle deals then they’ll add up quickly. I recommend doing your research on your local spas, even get a few consultations before booking.

If you have any tips on getting facials I’d love to hear them! Comment below if you have anything to share πŸ™‚

Evening Skincare Routine

You all know I’m a skincare junkie, I love buying, testing and reviewing products but that also means my routine is constantly changing. With the recent season switch and new products arriving all the time my evening routine has changed a little since I last shared it!

My evening routine is what helps me wind down after a busy or stressful day and it’s something that I NEVER forget to do. Even if I’ve had a couple drinks, even if I’m dead tired or not feeling well, I know that my evening care is what keeps my skin from freaking out.

I have a naturally oily face (in my t-zone) and normal in the other areas so I like to use gentle products. Below are my go-to skin treats in order of my routine! πŸ™‚

  1. Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Solution – Oily Skin: I start my routine by removing all makeup with this water and a cotton pad. It’s amazing at getting (mostly) every bit off, even waterproof makeup! micellaire.jpg
  2. Olay Oily Minimizing Foaming Cleanser: I continue with this super gentle and non-drying foaming cleanser. I love it because you don’t need a ton of it for a good clean and it leaves your skin baby smooth. olay
  3. Rodan + Fields Unblemish Clarifying Toner: This is the only toner that I use because I find that it really helps to shrink my pores and give my skin a deep clean if there’s any leftover bacteria. untj125-unblemish-clarifying-toner-lg
  4. LancΓ΄me Advanced GΓ©nifique Youth Activating Concentrate: I received this serum as a gift 3 months ago and haven’t stopped using it since. I’m even going to buy the serum in-store once I run out. That’s how AMAZING it is! I honestly believe that this serum is what prevents breakouts and keeps my skin hydrated and plump 24/7. 3605533117217_1.7OZ_ADVANCEDGENIFIQUE
  5. Summer Fridays Jetlag Mask: I now use this mask as an overnight under-eye treatment because it visibly reduces my dark circles in the AM! It’s also very hydrating which is going to be great during these dryer fall and then winter months. s2071322-main-zoom
  6. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: I hate having chapped lips so I always apply this last and right before I sleep. It’s a really nice thick consistency and smells like fruity bubblegum! I wake up with SUPER moisturized lips every time. zoom_263e9a674cf11988b0edd6af94da81dd41db8879_1520356136_33733_Laneige_LipSleepingMask_Classic_WEB

4 Ways to Feel Your Best Throughout the Day

We all know that some days are just better than others, but with a few tweaks in our daily schedules it’s possible to feel healthy and refreshed even on our busiest days. Whether it’s an early morning workout, a cup of herbal tea, or a few minutes of meditation there are so many ways to improve how you’re feeling during the day.

Below are little life hacks that you can add to your day to ensure that you’re always feeling your best!

  1. Drink naturally infused water throughout the day. Lemon water in particular is great for flushing out toxins and providing a boost of energy. If you get through the day without drinking sugary beverages, you’ll feel much better and more awake!
  2. Start your morning off with cardio. Even before you go to grab your breakfast, make it a goal to start your day off with a run or a skip rope session. By doing this you’ll feel more awake, hungry for breakfast (if you’re not a morning person), and ready to take on the day. It’s also nice to start your day off with a shower, so working out in the AM fits perfectly into that schedule.
  3. Use a clarity or focus spray before doing work. My bestie recently got me the Saje Mental Alertness Spray and I can’t stop using it! A few sprays of this helps to clear my mind and allows me to focus on my work longer.
  4. Put your devices away while eating. If you’re going to have a lunch break mid-day, put your phone or laptop aside and let yourself relax while you eat. Even if it’s just 15 minutes of silence and eating, it’ll help your brain to re-focus and you’ll be more productive afterwards.

How do you stay feeling your best throughout the day? Share in the comments below!

A Body Moisturizer That Does More Than Just Hydrate

Hydrated and glowing skin is important to me, therefore I’m always on the hunt for the latest and greatest body moisturizers. I’ve finally found one that goes above and beyond and not only hydrates from morning to night but also prevents future moisture loss. The brand new moisturizer is called the “Active Hydration Body Replenish” from Rodan+Fields. This is something that we should all be using, especially as we move into the dryer months of autumn and winter! Take a look below to see why this hydrating moisturizer is ALL THAT.

Processed with VSCO with a10 preset

Benefits

Let’s keep this plain and simple! A great body moisturizer should show great results but shouldn’t be so complicated!

  1. This hydrating moisturizer sincerely keeps your skin hydrated from morning to night. It’s “long-lasting” capabilities aren’t just written on the label, they’re demonstrated every time the cream is applied to your skin. After one day of wearing this moisturizer all over (legs, arms, chest) my body felt more hydrated at the end of the day than at first application of other brand moisturizers! This stuff works deep in your skin and ensures that you can FEEL the hydration.
  2. It makes your skin GLOW. We hear the word “glow” everywhere, I’m even an offender of this, but this cream really does leave your skin glowing. Just yesterday I put it on and realized that my skin was sparkling the tiniest bit! Are there tiny sparkles in it? I don’t know, but whatever it is, it leaves your skin dazzling πŸ˜‰
  3. After just a few days of using this moisturizer consecutively your skin feels brand new and it’s difficult to return back to your original state of dryness. Which is good obviously, we don’t want to go backwards! The mix of Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin in this cream actually draws in moisture from the atmosphere and LOCKS IT IN. No wonder the hydration effect doesn’t wear off!
  4. A little goes a long way. Just like any luxurious product, a little goes a long way with this body moisturizer! Considering that the tub is so large, one of these could last months which is great for the budget IMO.

How to Use It

This might seem like a silly subject line but there is a specific way that you can apply this cream so that its full potential is used! I personally like to apply this cream as soon as I towel dry my body after a bath or shower. This ensures that the skin is getting full hydration as soon as you’re out in open air!

Processed with VSCO with a10 preset

Pricing & Availability

This large tub (200mL) goes for $76CAD and can last you anywhere between 3-6 months depending on how often and how much you use it. If you ask me, that’s a killer price for the quality of moisturizer that you’re getting! This is available online only and luckily I’ve got a link for you right here!

The Best Facial Serums – Tried & True

I’ve noticed over the past week that majority of my skincare is SERUMS! Somehow from all of the PR packages, events and my own purchases I’ve ended up with 6 different serums and yes I use them all. But not all at once obviously! πŸ˜‰

Each of them are similar in certain ways but also different in the specific benefits that they provide to the skin. Today I’ll be sharing each and every one of them, rating them from my favourite to least favourite!

Lancome Genefique Youth Activating Concentrate

This one ranks number one simply because it’s the one that works the quickest, in my opinion. A little bit of it goes a long way and it leaves your skin feeling and looking smooth and supple. After just 7 days (which is the expectation) I actually saw a change in my skin. I used it from the very first day I received in (about a week ago) and my skin hasn’t felt this good in a long time!

3605533117217_1.7OZ_ADVANCEDGENIFIQUE.jpg

Biotherm Aquasource Aura Concentrate

No matter how much I moisturize I tend to get dry in one area of my face when I apply makeup, my chin and around the corners of my mouth. However when using this product my skin instantly feels packed with moisture. It also leaves the most gorgeous glow on the skin, something that I find rare in most serums! I like pairing this with the aquasource gel from Biotherm for best results.

Image Skincare Vital-C Serum

I am obsessed with this new vitamin A, C and E serum because it literally gives my skin a refresher overnight. Plus it smells like a basket of oranges and lemons and who doesn’t love a good smelling product! πŸ˜‰ I don’t need much of this to cover my whole face and when I apply it I can instantly see the hydration happening on my skin. The first time I used this my jaw actually dropped when I woke up because my skin looked so brand new LOL.

Volition Snow Mushroom Water Serum

This is a newer product that I just started using and I’ve got to say the snow mushroom really does hydrate the skin in ways I’ve never seen before. The snow mushroom can hold 500x its weight in water, hence making this product absolutely amazing for dry skin. It also helps promote cell renewal and helps the skins collagen production! I love the way this serum makes my skin feel, smooth, plump and hydrated.

Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum

When I’m looking for an all natural serum this one is my go-to, which is usually when I have acne on my face. I don’t see a very drastic change in my skin after using it but it definitely gives my skin the hydration it needs when applying drying acne treatments!

Michael Todd Vitamin C Complex Plus Retinol Rejuvenating Serum

I’ve got to say that although this is supposed to be a rejuvenating serum, I really didn’t see or feel a change in my skin when using it. Even after a few days of continuous use day and night the only change was hydration! It’s supposed to also reduce the appearance of pores and dark spots but unfortunately I can’t say I saw a difference πŸ™

My Skincare Routine for Blemishes

If you follow me on Instagram you may have already seen through video how I treat my skin when problems start arising, but today I want to share the routine in a little more detail.

I’m blessed to be able to say that I don’t have skin problems very often and when I do they’re most likely caused by stress and hormones (that time of the month). Unfortunately this past week has been super busy for me, AKA insanely stressful for various reasons, and my skin has broken out more than ever before. I’m seeing pimples form out of no where and the bumps on my face are increasing like crazy.

I’ve also been wearing makeup almost everyday (a simple BB cream, concealer and mascara) so that probably hasn’t been helping to fix the problem. However, it was only this morning when I actually had time to look in the mirror for a good amount of time that I realized what was happening on my face!! I didn’t freak, I just told myself I’d have a nice self-care skin sesh before bed and drink lots of water. Which is exactly what I did! Here’s what it included…

Step 1: Steam Face with a Hot Facecloth

This step is always really important when I’m trying to get rid of blackheads because it opens up the pores and makes it easier to remove them.

Step 2: Blackhead Removal with Tool

I use a blackhead removal tool from Sephora to squeeze out any obvious blackheads that are causing bumps in my skin. These little guys are a pain in the butt even with makeup on top!

Step 3: Blackhead Removal with Charcoal

I use the Biore Nose Pore Strips and a no-name brand charcoal peel-off mask (shop a similar one here) to further remove any blackheads that I couldn’t get out myself. I don’t do this very often, not even once a week because it tends to dry out the skin. I apply the mask only to the areas that are prone to developing blackheads to prevent dehydration.

Step 4: Unblemish Clarifying Toner

This is the toner that I use every single night because it works to tighten and clear out your pores. I usually use a cotton pad to apply but it can also be applied by patting the product onto the skin with your hands.

Step 5: Unblemish Dual Intensive Acne Treatment

I will never use any another acne treatment because this product has proven to me time and time again how well it actually works. It has two pumps, one is application lotion and the other is Benzyl Peroxide Lotion. They’re separate because when mixed together in one bottle they don’t work as well as when they’re first combined (science stuff, idk). I apply this to all of the areas where I’m experiencing acne and blackheads and I never actually have to pop any of my pimples. This stuff gets rid of the acne and bumps before they turn white and pop-able.

Step 6: Image Skincare Vital-C Hydrating Overnight Mask

I recently got this mask from an Image Skincare Launch Event and the hydration it provides for my skin is unreal!! It’s not an every night mask, more like 1-2 times a week, but it totally revitalizes your face and you wake up feeling like a brand new person, seriously. It has a deliciously refreshing citrus scent and has a jelly like consistency which makes it cool to the touch and very smooth to apply. I tried to find the link to this product but it may not be online yet so follow me on Insta (@haleyestradaa) for updates! πŸ™‚

Step 7: Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

This eye cream is a little thicker than my usual ones but it really hydrates the under eyes and reduces puffiness and dark circles. Plus it has avocado, duh, what a trendy eye cream! πŸ˜‰

Step 8: Lip Care

If my lips are extremely chapped I’ll apply a Lip Renewing Serum but otherwise I usually go for one of my other favourite lip products. You can find the list in my last post here.

I hope this post was helpful for those of you with similar skin issues! I love sharing these routines with you guys because I think it’s important to show the not so pretty parts of my life and how I deal with each situation. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below babes!

Is Hand-Washing Your Face Bad For Your Skin?

We should all know that there’s no point in using skincare if you’re not applying it to a clean palette, AKA your face. For many of us washing our face involves just our fingertips, a cleanser and water but since I started using a Sonic facial cleansing system a question popped into my head. Is using your fingertips to wash your face actually bad for your skin? I did a bit of research and came up with an answer which of course I’ll be sharing with all of you because it’s quite interesting what I found!

Apparently using your fingertips to wash your face is one of the best things you can do for your skin! Your fingertips serve as a gentle massage for your skin and help to stimulate circulation. There are no facts that go against using your fingertips to wash your face, in fact it’s recommended by many beauty experts over the daily use of a cleansing brush!

A few things that you should keep in mind about washing your face is the temperature of the water, what type of cleanser you’re using and your method of washing. Take a look below to see some important points on these topics.

Temperature

While cold water temporarily tightens pores and hot water feels best, both of these temperatures can actually have a negative effect on your skin. Cold water doesn’t do a great job of thoroughly cleaning and hot water can leave your skin irritated and dry. The best temperature of water to wash your face with is lukewarm.

Type of Cleanser

This is an entirely different topic but it’s important to educate yourself on the skin-concerns that you might have so that you use the proper cleanser. Acne prone skin often requires drastically different cleansers than normal skin. Dry versus oily skin is the same!

Method

The best way to wash your face, a way that has been working for me, is to rinse your face, apply the cleanser and massage your skin in small circular and upward motions. Even though I love my Soniclear Petite cleansing brush from Michael Todd, I’ve decided to use it only 1-2 times a week to protect my sensitive skin. Even though the bristles are extremely soft and it has a very low speed setting, it still serves as a form of exfoliation which isn’t necessary every day.

The Verdict

While cleansing systems and brushes are huge in the market, they’re not always the best way to wash your face. Your fingertips are your best tool indeed and a brush should only be used a few times a week for a deep clean and exfoliation.

The Best Affordable Concealer

Although I’m not a full-face of makeup kind of gal, I do like to use concealer to cover up blemishes and marks on my face. I also aim to buy affordable products that I know I’ll be buying often, AKA, concealer. It took me a while to figure out which concealer was best for me and I went through tons of affordable to expensive products before finding the perfect one (which happened to only be under $15).

I’ve now been using the same concealer for 4 years and I can honestly say that it’s my favourite (even over the NARS creamy concealer, can you believe it?!?). This is literally the only concealer in my makeup drawer, and I’ve got two shades, one for my paler seasons and one for when I’m tanned πŸ’πŸ½β€β™€οΈ

I use concealer the most on my under eyes and on my chin where I have a couple dark spots that I’m trying to get rid of. Right on top of my concealer I put on a pressed powder from the same brand and the two together make a flawless complexion πŸ™ŒπŸ½ .

I don’t wear foundation so I can’t speak to how the concealer sits overtop of it but wearing it bare has worked very well for me! It’s buildable, just the right consistency and has great coverage. In addition, it’s oil free which is important to me because I’ve got naturally oily skin.

And the concealer is…..Drumroll please……Maybelline’s Fit Me Liquid Concealer!

Some of you may have tried this already but if you haven’t I highly recommend that you do!! Especially if you’re looking for a more affordable option πŸ˜‰ (not sponsored or an ad, I just truly love this product).

I use the shade 25-Medium for my natural skin colour and shade 35-Deep for when I’m tanned. I use my fingers to do the primary blending of the concealer and then follow it with a beauty blender to get an extra natural look.

The pressed powder that I use on top of this concealer is the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Pressed Powder in shade 220 – Natural Beige. It takes away any natural shine that I have and it’s great for touching up throughout the day!

Have you guys tried either of these products? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! πŸ’•

Xoxo,
