My Current Daytime Skincare Routine

Here’s what I use on the daily to keep my skin healthy and glowing!

Advertisements

It’s been a while since I’ve shared my update skincare routine, so today I’m laying it all out for you. I’ve been struggling a bit with acne recently so I’ve switched over to some products that are helping to control it. In addition, I’ve been using some products that help with the texture and enlarged pores. Let’s dive in shall we?

#1 Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser

This is the cleanser that I’ve been using to combat incoming acne and pimples that have already surfaced. It has salicylic acid which is a chemical exfoliant and helps to break down impurities!

#2 Sunday Riley Good Genes

To get rid of my acne scars I’ve been using the Good Genes because it has Lactic Acid. It exfoliates the skin and helps to unclog pores, even out texture and reduce dark spots. I’ve found that after using this for even just a month my scars have lightened quite a bit.

#3 Swiss Line Recovery Serum

Basically this serum helps to revive the skin. So whether it’s because I’ve been out drinking too much or maybe eating poorly during the week, this serum improves my skin’s self-renewal. The signs of fatigue and stress are much less visible!

#4 Swiss Line Perfection Booster

This is a booster that I mix in with the Recovery Serum. It has 10% lactic acid which again helps to exfoliate the skin. Basically this booster helps to resurface and smooth skin texture and reduce the size of my pores.

#5 Decorté Overnight Performance Cream

This cream hydrates, lifts and firms my skin. A little bit goes a long way and I love it because my skin feels so moisturized when I wake up! The ingredients in it help the skin to look more youthful and bouncy over time.

#6 Summer Fridays Jetlag Mask

Under my eyes I use the jetlag mask because out of all the eye creams I’ve tried, this one truly helps to reduce puffiness and darkness when I’m extremely tired.

#7 Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

I don’t remember the last time I had chapped lips and this sleeping mask is why! It’s super thick and smells amazing. It keeps my lips super hydrated and plump.

What are some skincare products you’re loving right now?

Guide to Glowing Skin

Here is how I keep my skin glowing 24/7!

Spring is here and summer is not too far away, and one of my favourite parts about the warmer seasons is bodycare. I love a good shimmer mist or body cream that makes my skin glow. So today I’m sharing my guide to glowy skin, so that you can shine all spring and summer long.

The underlying cause of glowing skin is hydration, so to start off this guide, my first tip would be to drink enough water on the daily. I aim to drink at least 2 litres of water a day and something that helps keep me on track is my Healthish WB-1 waterbottle. Staying hydrated from the inside, will ensure a brighter and radiant glow on the outside.

My next tip for glowy skin is to moisturize twice daily, with an intense body moisturizer. My personal favourites are listed below because they penetrate deep into the skin to ensure that the moisture lasts a long time and they help with the appearance of smoother skin.

#1 The Body Shop Shea Body Butter

#2 Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish

Another great way to hydrate the skin, especially during the daytime is to use a body oil. I say during the daytime because I find that using a body oil makes the skin look much more glowy than a regular moisturizer, and they usually smell really good so it’s a win-win! My favourite body oil right now is the OUAI Rose Hair and Body Oil. It’s got an amazing rose fragrance and doesn’t leave a sticky residue on the skin after applying.

My final tip for glowy skin in the spring and summer time is to use a shimmer mist! Recently, I started using this and it has made a big difference in how my skin looks in person and in photos. It’s particularly amazing for photos where you’re showing a bit more skin, aka the legs, chest or arm areas. The mist that I use in the OUAI Hair and Body Shine Mist. It has a really unique scent and can be used on hair and your skin. I love it because you don’t need a lot when you apply and it gives a very natural glowy look.

How do you keep your skin glowing all spring and summer long?

Nexcare Pimple Patch Review

I’m usually not one to get pimples on a regular basis, maybe one or two a month during that time, but recently I had a huge breakout on my chin and I had no idea why. It had me searching high and low for products that would get rid of them ASAP. It was quite unusual because there were about four pimples that surfaced at the same time. Thankfully, earlier that week I had seen a girlfriend of mine post about pimple patches and her IG stories intrigued me to try them out.

Pimple patches work as protective covers and sponges for all the gross sh*t that’s inside. It’s suggested that you puncture the pimple before applying the patch so that there’s an exit point. They work best when the pimple has already become white and is right at the point where you want to pop it.

I ordered the Cosrx Patches from Amazon, but since they didn’t arrive as soon as I’d hoped, I picked up the Nexcare Pimple Patches instead. This was my first time trying anything like this, so I thought I’d give a “first impressions” review!

How to Use Them

  1. Make sure your hands are clean and the area of the pimple is completely clean.
  2. Puncture the pimple, preferably at the pore, with the tiniest needle you can find or a sterile lancet.
  3. Using tissues (do not go skin to skin) or the ends of q-tips, gently squeeze out any excess oils.
  4. Apply the pimple patch. Leave it on until it changes from translucent to white. This means that the pus and oil has been absorbed.

First Impressions

I applied four different pimple patches on my first try and two out of the four actually worked. The other two didn’t work as well and I know will be coming back because not all of the oils were absorbed. I can tell because there is still swelling in the area.

The two pimple patches that worked flattened in about 3 hours, however I do have small dark spots. Hopefully they will disappear with my consistent skincare routine.

The packaging doesn’t tell you to rupture the pimple first, however I do believe that creating an exit point is what makes the product work best. Next time I use these I’ll try to find a smaller needle, as I feel like the small pin I used was a bit too large and may have caused the dark spot that is now left.

A couple of things that I didn’t love about the Nexcare Pimple Patches were 1) the thickness of the patches and 2) how well they stuck to my skin. I’ve heard that the Cosrx brand is better in both of these ways so I’m excited to try those ones out. The Nexcare patches were very visible because they were so thick, and I had to keep pressing them down onto my skin because the edges would actually lift after a few minutes, especially if I was talking or eating.

Overall, I do think that the pimple patches work but I’m looking forward to trying out the Cosrx brand to see how they compare. If you want to see a review on those ones let me know in the comments! You can shop the Nexcare Pimple Patches here.

My Current Skincare Routine: AM & PM

As you know, my skincare routine changes almost every month and over the past few weeks I’ve been on a routine that has done wonders for my face. A couple of the products I’ve been using are newer to me, but they truly work and I’m super happy with my results. My newer products are from The Body Shop’s “Drops of Youth” line. I was introduced to this line about mid-January and have been using them day and night ever since.

A skincare routine for me consists of serums, moisturizers, eye creams, lip products and face wash. Since I have combination skin, it’s often difficult to find a balance between all of those products and find something that works for every part of my face. Luckily with the products I’m using now, my skin is looking and feeling amazing.

A routine that works for me tightens my pores, rids my blackheads, keeps my skin feeling hydrated, prevents breakouts and improves the texture (smoothness) all around. Enough of the chit chat though, below are the products I’m using and loving.

Morning Routine

Face Wash: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser

Serum: Alumier MD EverActive C&E Serum

Moisturizer: Drops of Youth, Youth Cream

Sunscreen: Coola Sun Silk Drops (SPF 30)

Evening Routine

Face Wash: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser

Serum: Drops of Youth, Youth Concentrate

Moisturizer: Drops of Youth, Youth Cream

Eye Cream: Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

Lips: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

None of the content in this post is sponsored however products were gifted to me a while back. Most of the skincare I use is gifted, and that’s only because I hate to waste what I receive! When I recommend products, I genuinely am using them and loving them. These are the ones that are on heavy rotation atm.

How Often You Should Get a Facial

Many factors come into play when getting a facial; your skin type, conditions, age and budget. I am certainly not a derm or a professional in the skincare industry, but I have had my fair share of facials and I’ve been able to chat with a lot of different estheticians in the process. Therefore I wanted to share the knowledge I’ve learned from these skincare professionals!

If you’re already using a good selection of products in your skincare routine (not your average drugstore products) then your skin is probably in better condition than you think. Facials, however, are a fantastic way to give your skin a boost. After all, your skin is a living organ 😉

Without getting too scientific here I want to explain why facials are good for your skin. Basically the cells within your skin move up to the surface every 30 or so days and they “die”. These are those “dead skin cells” that your dermatologist and estheticians always talk about. So there you have it, every month you should be getting a facial!

There are other factors that will affect how often you should get a facial though, as I mentioned above. Your skin type (dry, oily, combo, sensitive, normal) will affect this. I personally have combination skin so I should be going every month, or maybe every 3 weeks because there is more to clear out in terms of blackheads and clogged pores. Dry and normal skin are totally fine to get facials every month or even every 5-6 weeks and people with sensitive skin might consider going less often to prevent reactions and irritation.

The type of facial you’re getting will also affect how often you should be going. There are many different types of facials out there; chemical peels, hydration facials, light therapy, etc. If you switch up the types of facials you’re getting then you may be able to go more often, or even wait longer between each one. Definitely ask your esthetician the next time you get one!

Lastly, age and budget will affect how often you should be getting facials. Younger people have an easier time generating new cells therefore we don’t need to go as often as people with less collagen growth. Budget is a huge factor because facials can get quite pricey and unless you’re purchasing bundle deals then they’ll add up quickly. I recommend doing your research on your local spas, even get a few consultations before booking.

If you have any tips on getting facials I’d love to hear them! Comment below if you have anything to share 🙂

My Top 5 Hydration Heroes

We all know that winter time = dry skin and honestly it’s hard to find products that actually work to combat flakiness and rough texture. So today I’m sharing a few products that have been working really well for me as the temperatures start to decline.

As it starts to get colder in Vancouver, I can feel my skin getting dryer and dryer so I’m trying to make sure that I use as much hydrating product as  possible 24/7. I find that even if I skip one day of using my hydrating products, the moisture is just sucked out of my skin and I’m left feeling dull and dehydrated.

I use most of these products on a daily basis and some of them only a few times a week. If you’re having issues with dry skin then these could be the answers to your problems!

Image Skincare – Vital C Overnight Mask

This mask is something that I put on 2-4 times a week when my skin is feeling super parched. I love the way it smells (like freshly squeezed orange juice) and how it makes my skin feel upon application.

I apply a thick layer of this over-top of my toner and serum and wear it overnight. I wake up with super plump and glowing skin! Works every time 🙂

Summer Friday’s Jet Lag Mask

This is another hydrating mask that I love and I’m sure you’re sick of me saying it because I rave about it too often 😉 I love this mask because it can be used whenever I want and in multiple ways.

The most hydrating way to use this in the winter (IMO) is to apply a thick layer of it on the face before sleeping. You can tell whether or not your skin is dehydrated by how fast it soaks in! I also love to use it as an under-eye mask overnight to prevent dark circles.

Jowaè Hydrating Water Mist

Whether I’ve just finished working out or need a spritz of hydration throughout the day, this water mist from Jowaè never lets me down. It’s one of the most hydrating mists I own and smells delightful! I’d carry this with me everywhere if the bottle wasn’t so big 😉

The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey Body Butter

If you follow me on Instagram then you know this is my favourite body lotion. The body butter from The Body Shop works miracles on dry skin. The Almond Milk & Honey one in particular is for sensitive skin so it’s especially great for the winter time.

I put this body butter on every single day after I shower and the moisture stays in my skin for over a day!

Marcelle Cosmetics Micellar Water for Dry Skin

During the winter I find that my skin feels the most dry when I remove my makeup and wash my face. Instead of my regular micellar water and face wash I’ve switched over to the Marcelle Dry Skin Micellar Water because it hydrates while removing makeup.

I like to use this at the end of the day before showering and also after a workout to remove any sweat!

mar_2018-03_eau_micellaire_dryskin_2000x2000.jpg

In addition to the use of these products I’m making it my daily goal to drink at least 2L of water everyday. Drinking water is extremely important to maintain healthy skin, especially because we consume so many hot, caffeinated drinks during this season!

If you have any hydrating products that are really working for you I would love to hear them below in the comments! I haven’t found a face moisturizer yet that truly leaves my skin feeling hydrated during the winter so I’d appreciate any recommendations you might have!

Evening Skincare Routine

You all know I’m a skincare junkie, I love buying, testing and reviewing products but that also means my routine is constantly changing. With the recent season switch and new products arriving all the time my evening routine has changed a little since I last shared it!

My evening routine is what helps me wind down after a busy or stressful day and it’s something that I NEVER forget to do. Even if I’ve had a couple drinks, even if I’m dead tired or not feeling well, I know that my evening care is what keeps my skin from freaking out.

I have a naturally oily face (in my t-zone) and normal in the other areas so I like to use gentle products. Below are my go-to skin treats in order of my routine! 🙂

  1. Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Solution – Oily Skin: I start my routine by removing all makeup with this water and a cotton pad. It’s amazing at getting (mostly) every bit off, even waterproof makeup! micellaire.jpg
  2. Olay Oily Minimizing Foaming Cleanser: I continue with this super gentle and non-drying foaming cleanser. I love it because you don’t need a ton of it for a good clean and it leaves your skin baby smooth. olay
  3. Rodan + Fields Unblemish Clarifying Toner: This is the only toner that I use because I find that it really helps to shrink my pores and give my skin a deep clean if there’s any leftover bacteria. untj125-unblemish-clarifying-toner-lg
  4. Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate: I received this serum as a gift 3 months ago and haven’t stopped using it since. I’m even going to buy the serum in-store once I run out. That’s how AMAZING it is! I honestly believe that this serum is what prevents breakouts and keeps my skin hydrated and plump 24/7. 3605533117217_1.7OZ_ADVANCEDGENIFIQUE
  5. Summer Fridays Jetlag Mask: I now use this mask as an overnight under-eye treatment because it visibly reduces my dark circles in the AM! It’s also very hydrating which is going to be great during these dryer fall and then winter months. s2071322-main-zoom
  6. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: I hate having chapped lips so I always apply this last and right before I sleep. It’s a really nice thick consistency and smells like fruity bubblegum! I wake up with SUPER moisturized lips every time. zoom_263e9a674cf11988b0edd6af94da81dd41db8879_1520356136_33733_Laneige_LipSleepingMask_Classic_WEB

A Body Moisturizer That Does More Than Just Hydrate

Hydrated and glowing skin is important to me, therefore I’m always on the hunt for the latest and greatest body moisturizers. I’ve finally found one that goes above and beyond and not only hydrates from morning to night but also prevents future moisture loss. The brand new moisturizer is called the “Active Hydration Body Replenish” from Rodan+Fields. This is something that we should all be using, especially as we move into the dryer months of autumn and winter! Take a look below to see why this hydrating moisturizer is ALL THAT.

Processed with VSCO with a10 preset

Benefits

Let’s keep this plain and simple! A great body moisturizer should show great results but shouldn’t be so complicated!

  1. This hydrating moisturizer sincerely keeps your skin hydrated from morning to night. It’s “long-lasting” capabilities aren’t just written on the label, they’re demonstrated every time the cream is applied to your skin. After one day of wearing this moisturizer all over (legs, arms, chest) my body felt more hydrated at the end of the day than at first application of other brand moisturizers! This stuff works deep in your skin and ensures that you can FEEL the hydration.
  2. It makes your skin GLOW. We hear the word “glow” everywhere, I’m even an offender of this, but this cream really does leave your skin glowing. Just yesterday I put it on and realized that my skin was sparkling the tiniest bit! Are there tiny sparkles in it? I don’t know, but whatever it is, it leaves your skin dazzling 😉
  3. After just a few days of using this moisturizer consecutively your skin feels brand new and it’s difficult to return back to your original state of dryness. Which is good obviously, we don’t want to go backwards! The mix of Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin in this cream actually draws in moisture from the atmosphere and LOCKS IT IN. No wonder the hydration effect doesn’t wear off!
  4. A little goes a long way. Just like any luxurious product, a little goes a long way with this body moisturizer! Considering that the tub is so large, one of these could last months which is great for the budget IMO.

How to Use It

This might seem like a silly subject line but there is a specific way that you can apply this cream so that its full potential is used! I personally like to apply this cream as soon as I towel dry my body after a bath or shower. This ensures that the skin is getting full hydration as soon as you’re out in open air!

Processed with VSCO with a10 preset

Pricing & Availability

This large tub (200mL) goes for $76CAD and can last you anywhere between 3-6 months depending on how often and how much you use it. If you ask me, that’s a killer price for the quality of moisturizer that you’re getting! This is available online only and luckily I’ve got a link for you right here!

What are your thoughts on this brand new product? Let me know if you’re thinking of trying it or already have! 🙂

The Importance of Removing Your Makeup at Night

We’ve all been there, done that. Removing your makeup can become a chore after a long day and unless you know the real reason behind the task you probably won’t do it. Even if it is just a swipe of mascara or a couple dabs of concealer, by leaving it on your face overnight you’re doing more harm to your skin than you think!

I’m no dermatologist but I do know a thing or two about proper skin care, so here’s what can happen when you don’t remove your makeup before bed.

CLOGGED PORES

You don’t need to be an Einstein to know this one! Your makeup collects environmental bacteria throughout the day so it’s obvious that if you don’t wash it off it will most likely be seeping deep into your pores.

ACNE

In follow up to the clogged pores issue, the bacteria that sits on and eventually in your skin can cause acne to form. The solution for this is as simple as using a facial cleanser!

DEHYDRATION & DULLNESS

A lot of the makeup that we wear has drying effects because it’s not meant to sit on your face permanently. Facial coverage makeup like primers, concealers and foundations are probably the worst out of all for your skin if you’re sleeping in them. They’re thick, often oil-based and completely block your pores. Your skin has a certain routine to renew itself and if it’s clogged with product then it definitely can’t do its job! If your skin can’t breathe properly then you’re likely to see a dehydrated and dull face in the morning.

WHAT ABOUT EYE MAKEUP?

Believe it or not, eye makeup can still do damage while you sleep. Unless you stay in one position the entire night, you’re bound to rub your eyes on your pillows or even with your hand. Smudging the eyeliner, eyeshadow and mascara into your eye and all around can cause a lot of irritation which might lead to puffiness, redness, and even small bumps. If the makeup happens to clog the oil glands or hair follicles then bacteria can form and result in styes and inflammation.

A MAKEUP REMOVER TO TRY

Over my years of wearing makeup I’ve tried a few different removers, but one of them has continuously impressed me. I have combination skin and it’s also quite sensitive so this remover is gentle, oil-free, and works like a charm for regular and waterproof makeup.

So what will it be…facial cleanser or blackheads, acne, dehydration, and dullness?! What are your thoughts on removing your makeup before bed? Let me know in the comments!

How to Use the Body Scrub

It’s quite a simple process actually. Scrub however much you want onto any part of the body (your face included!) and then rinse it off!

Review

I used this scrub on my entire body for 3 nights in a row to really get a feel for how the product worked when used consistently. The scent of the scrub is a dreamy concoction of natural coconut and grinded coffee. Pretty amazing if you ask me! That was the first thing I noticed when opening up my little package. The second thing I noticed was that the scrub is quite messy, but thank goodness I was in the shower! I highly recommend that you apply the scrub in a place you don’t mind getting dirty, or at least somewhere you can rinse it down the drain afterwards.

When applying the scrub to my skin it felt like a heavy exfoliator yet very hydrating at the same time. I scrubbed for a good 30-60 seconds and then rinsed it off. The fragrance of the scrub lingered in my skin for the rest of the night and was actually quite lovely.

My skin felt smoother with each use and it definitely scrubbed away pretty much all dead skin that was existing. After the 3 nights of using the scrub I could tell that my skin was already glowing and much more hydrated!

If you’re looking for a fun and tropical way to exfoliate your skin to its ultimate smoothness and glow then I recommend the Black Coconut Body scrub from Willow! It won’t disappoint!

Until next time…
