Tips on Working from Home

Find out how to make the most out of working from home!

As someone who is constantly working from home, I’ve been able to figure out how to make the most out of my day. Most people think it’s working in your pjs from bed all day, but that’s definitely not the case. For me, a lot of thought is put into working from home because it’s THAT easy to curl right back up in bed.

I’ve tried sitting in bed all day working to get my task list checked off, and let me tell you now, it doesn’t work. I’ve also tried sleeping in and working later, but that wasn’t ideal either. In order to get my work done I need to wake up earlier, start my morning off with a boost of energy and tackle a to-do list one by one. Here are the ways that I get all of my work done at home.

Wake Up Early

This might mean something different to you, depending on when you usually get up, but for me it means 8 to 8:30am. I find that setting my alarm even an hour later than this (9am) prevents me from getting up right away. Being up with the rest of my household at 8am encourages me to make my bed, change my clothes and start the day.

Workout Right Away

I used to convince myself I couldn’t do this because I’d wake up hungry, too tired, etc, etc. However those were excuses and I’m glad I’ve put an end to them because working out as soon as I’m awake gets my blood flowing and helps me be more productive. Once the workout is over I can focus the rest of my day on what’s important. It doesn’t need to be a long workout, even 20-30 minutes will do you good!

Shower

If you workout you should probably shower too, but this is a win-win situation. If your sweat sesh didn’t wake you up, then a shower surely will! You’ll also be ready for the day in case you need to go out.

Prepare a Checklist

I find that physically writing down my to-do list the evening before really helps me to get things done the next day. Whether it’s on my whiteboard or a notebook, being able to prioritize and actually check things off throughout the day allows me to get more done. I also write down ideal times for getting things done, see my example below.

8am – wake up, workout, shower

9am – emails

10am – content creation for (brand)

Make Your Own Schedule

Every work shift has a start and an end time, so I try my best to do that for my own schedule too. If I’m waking up at 8am, having a workout, lunch break or running errands, then I’ll end my day around 5-6pm. However, in this industry your work is going on 24/7, so you just need to know when to stop answering your emails 😉 Knowing how to do this comes in handy when you have family or significant-other time planned.

I hope these tips help you get more done while working at home! If you have any other suggestions for increased productivity and organization please share them in a comment below! 🙂

Minimal Bedroom Decor

Since I recently moved into my new (and much larger) bedroom I’ve been trying to decorate and organize as minimally as possible. That means purging LIKE CRAZY, constantly moving everything and decorating in the simplest ways.

In my previous bedroom I had a lot of white and gold, but this time around I’m going for more natural materials and colours. I’m trying to get rid of most of the gold furniture and decor and bring in more browns and blacks. Let me tell you though, it has been SO difficult! I feel as if my mind is in a thousand places at once. With that being said though, I have managed to decorate a few parts of my room, so I want to share them with you today.

I personally love reading about and watching room renovations and interior design processes so if you do too then this post will be the perfect read. Let’s get started!

THE WORK CORNER

I went for a natural and modern looking chair and luckily I found this gorgeous IKEA one 40% off on Facebook Marketplace. In the corner I have different sized cylinder boxes with extra notebooks, moisturizers and camera gear, AKA things that I rarely pull out. On the left wall I also have my glass whiteboard from IKEA which I use to write out my daily to-do’s and things to remember. You can shop the chair here.

THE CLOTHING RACK

Since I have so many coats I decided to use them as a display item because 1) it saves closet space and 2) it adds some texture to the room! For a more aesthetic look I order my coats from dark to light. I got this IKEA rack for $20CAD, you can shop it here.

THE ARTWORK

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I kept only the black DIY framed artwork from my last bedroom because like I said above, I’m trying to get rid of my gold. But it all fit perfectly on this shelf and above my mirror! You can get this picture ledge here and my mirror (not pictured) here. To find out how I created this DIY photo frames you can watch my tutorial here!

THE SHELVING UNITS

This first shelving unit is a white metal frame with glass shelves, so I wanted to keep it as minimal as possible to really get the illusion of space. I hate clutter so I tried to only show items that provide usefulness or beauty to the shelf. The dark brown baskets are from IKEA and I got them to match my chair! The jewellery box and skincare holder are both from Marshalls Canada. You can find the baskets here.

This second shelving unit shown below is also from IKEA and I’m using it to display my favourite shoes of the season and a few books. I tried to show only brown and black items so that everything would match! You can find the shelving unit here.

THE WINDOW UNIT

The only items I will always have on this shelving unit in front of the window are these new vases from IKEA and a scented candle. Since this unit is reflective and in front of the window I wanted to keep it clean and plain. You can find the shelving unit here. Unfortunately I can’t find the vases online but I’m sure you’d be able to find them in-store.

THE CURTAINS

Since the room is so large I wanted to cover one of the windows to create a cozier environment. These ones from IKEA were totally inexpensive and really add something to the room. You can find the curtains here and the rod here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

That’s it for my room decor! I’ve still got a few spots that I want to fill up but I’ll be sure to share with you when they’re complete.

5 Ways to Refresh Your Life

Is it just me, or are you wondering how September creeped up on us so quickly too? I feel as if the summer ran away from me! With that being said though, I do adore the Autumn months and I have a lot of exciting projects and collaborations coming up, so as much as I’d love summer to stay I’m ready to say goodbye. Before I do though, I’m in desperate need of a life refresher and if you are too then you might find this post helpful. Keep reading to learn about five ways you can refresh your life right now!

  1. Evaluate your diet. I indulged this summer, a little more than I should have, and I kind of let my body just be. Now that everyone is back to a set routine I’m ready to refresh my eating habits. Having a proper diet prevents unnecessary stress, laziness and keeps you in a healthy state of mind. What I’m going to do is finish off the year with a semi-strict diet that makes me feel good. I start my morning off the same everyday (eggs and tomatoes or avocado, coffee, green juice and vitamins), snack on healthy foods throughout the day (nuts, fruit, veggies), eat a light and healthy lunch (salads, veggies with hummus, rice cakes with avo, etc) and end my day with protein and veggies! I won’t give in to all of my cravings but if there’s a dessert that I really want I’ll definitely let myself eat it, balance is key.
  2. Create a workout schedule. This goes hand in hand with eating properly and I find that when I workout consistently I’m much more productive than when I’m not active. My goal for the rest of the year is to workout at least 4 times a week. No matter what your schedule is, if you include a workout in your routine, you’ll feel healthier in no time.
  3. Set weekly and monthly goals. A lot of new things are going on in my life right now so to stay on track I’m going to set realistic weekly and monthly goals. For example, this week my goal is to invest a little more in my blog and learn how to properly monetize it. With the time that I have during the week I’ll be researching and figuring out how I can reach this goal! You might be surprised at how much you can get done when you set goals like this.
  4. Clear out your closet. Sleeping and working in a clean and organized room is so important. It allows me to think more clearly and relax properly when I need to. I love clearing out my closet of things I don’t use or have outgrown because it truly is refreshing! Sell those items so you can give your closet a refresher with new items! Look good, feel good 😉
  5. Read. I’ve started reading motivational and positive quotes, articles and books every now and then because it gives me a great perspective on life. Taking half an hour to an hour of your day to sit and read in silence helps to let your inner thoughts flow. I also find that I’m more positive throughout the day if I do this in the morning 🙂

How do you give your life a little refresher? Share with me in the comments below! 🙂

How I Organize My Wardrobe

When it comes to organization, you already know I’m your gal! My wardrobe specifically has a special system so that I always know where to look and find my favourite pieces. Having organization within your closet and drawers really helps to save time and prevent stress. If you already don’t know what to wear in the morning and then you have to search through numerous piles of unfolded and disorganized clothing your stress levels are sure to increase! Hopefully the way that I organize my wardrobe will help you figure out yours.

Closet Organization

I have an open closet concept in my bedroom so organization is that much more important because everything can be seen whenever someone walks in the door. I have three separate hanging racks, two short and one tall, so I organize my clothing according to their LENGTH. Obviously the tall pieces go on the longer rack so that they don’t bunch up and wrinkle and the blouses, sweaters, and folded trousers go on the shorter racks. In addition to length I also organize my clothing by COLOUR. As you can see in the photos I pair all of the similar colours together (brown, grey, whites, red, green, black) all while keeping in mind their lengths.

Dresser Organization

The dresser organization is where it gets a little tricky because my clothing is out of view and often gets messy. I organize the clothing that can be folded by STYLE and in cube compartments from IKEA. Each separate box contains either short sleeved shirts, long sleeved shirts, tank tops, or pull-overs and hoodies. My tip for keeping your drawers clean would be to FOLD your items every time you put them back in. It seems like an obvious action but you don’t know how many times I’ve told myself I’ll “fold them later” and never actually end up doing it! Reminding yourself to fold your clothing right away will be worth it in the long run.

Shoe Organization

I have a lot of shoes that require organizing so I have 3 different locations that I keep them in. I have a shoe rack and hanging shoe holder in my bedroom and one large shoe shelf at the entrance of my house. The shoe rack in my bedroom is categorized by STYLE and COLOUR. As you can see in the photos I keep all of my high heels in my bedroom (so that they stay in pristine condition) as well as the boots, sandals, and sneakers that I wear the most. The rest of my shoes (that I can’t seem to get rid of) are in my “remote” shoe shelf. Keeping my shoes organized like this makes it easy for me to choose and try on outfits in the comfort of my bedroom.

Accessory Organization

Scarves probably make up 80% of my accessories so they have three spots in my bedroom. My silk scarves are placed in the bottom box of my hanging shoe holder and also in my decorative glass container on top of my dresser. Bigger knit scarves are placed in the drawer beneath my bed because they just don’t look the best on display! Purses as you can see in the photos are placed on my floating shelves for easy access. I currently only have one belt so it gets rolled up and placed on display on my dresser. I would say that I keep my most used items on DISPLAY so that they’re easy to access and the rest in hiding.

How do you organize your closet? Let me know in the comments below if you have any suggestions and tips for wardrobe organization!

How to Create a Well-Organized Workspace

When it comes to the spaces that we work in, what surrounds you will define the way that you work. If your desk is cluttered and has no organization whatsoever, then you most likely work messily and often can’t find or remember things. However, if your workspace is well-organized and thought out then you probably work much more efficiently!

I’ve been a minimalist since day one and I like things to be perfectly in place and matching, therefore my workspace has always been this way. It could be the other way around in which my study habits defined the way I’ve created my workspace, but for the sake of this post let’s switch it and assume that your workspace defines your work habits.

IMG_0081.JPG

I’m a planner and an organized individual, so everything has a place and it’s taken time to finalize a workspace that I love working in.

I’ll be honest in saying that my workspace is tiny, and it’s because it’s located in my also tiny bedroom. I chose to place my desk in-front of the window to let natural light in and create a spacious feel. #1 create your space, whether it be an entire room or a corner like mine, have a space devoted to getting work done.

All of the pieces shown in this photo except for the stool are from IKEA (budget friendly). Choose furniture pieces that pair well together. My all white design is the perfect example, because it gets me feeling organized and motivated instantly.

Simple details matter and they make your space inspirational. The decorations I’ve chosen are aesthetic AND they have a purpose. They’re also all white, black, or gold; colours that get my creative juices flowing. The magazine rack is a great place to store folders and important documents and it doubles as “artwork” too!

Another thing that I always like to have on my desk is fresh blooms. Preferably white or lighter hues of flowers because they calm and act as a de-stressor. Oh and duh they look pretty!

In summary of my tips: create a devoted space, choose matching and comfortable furniture, remember that details matter, choose details that inspire you, make sure you have enough storage, and try to keep some sort of plant or flower on your desk at all times.

What are your workspace organization tips?
