1-Week Celery Juice Cleanse

Here’s what happened when I drank celery juice every morning for a week straight!

A couple of weeks ago I decided to try out the pure celery juice “cleanse” that’s currently all over the internet. Ever since Kylie Jenner revealed that this is what she drinks every morning, tons of blogs and websites have been covering the benefits of it. I’m a fan of celery and my skin wasn’t doing super well at the time, so I decided to give it a shot.

Lots of people don’t do the cleanse because they think it involves a juicer, but that’s definitely not necessary. It’s totally do-able with a blender and a strainer. To my surprise, preparing the juice was actually super quick! I’ll go over the ingredients and instructions below.

Benefits

Celery juice does more than just clear up your skin, it also detoxifies, is anti-inflammatory, promotes better bone and heart health and more.

Celery is high in Vitamin K and Vitamin C making it a great way to boost the immune system too. The anti-inflammatory properties reduce bloating, acid reflux, acne, eczema and other inflammation issues. I’m not a scientist but I do know that most of these things are true from personal experience!

How to Prepare the Juice

Ingredients: 5-6 sticks of celery, 15-16oz of cold water

Prep Time: 5 minutes

  • Rinse the celery and chop the ends of the sticks off. Cut the sticks in half and throw them in a regular high speed blender.
  • Add 15-16oz of water and blend until smooth.
  • Pour the celery pulp and juice into a large strainer over a bowl. Wait for most of the juice to be released then take a spoon and push down on the pulp to release excess liquid.
  • Pour the pure juice into a cup and voila! The celery pulp is great in soups, or you can chuck it in the organics bin.

My Results

I drank this first thing in the morning for 7 days in a row and from start to finish I saw a huge change in the balance and texture of my skin. I decided to write a blog post on this a few days into my cleanse so unfortunately I don’t have photos, but I’ll try my best to explain the differences I saw. Keep in mind that I didn’t change anything else in my routine and I was using the exact same skincare as always!

#1 My skin became smoother over the course of 7 days. I often get small bumps on my forehead and chin, and with this cleanse those began to vanish. Texture of my skin is something that I notice the most. When I say I’m having a “bad skin day” that usually means that I’ve got more texture than usual, pores are larger and blackheads more visible. The celery juice, IMO, helped clear this stuff up.

#2 My skin became brighter! This is a tricky one to explain, but basically I saw a change in how my skin looked when I woke up. A lot of mornings I’ll wake up and my skin will be dull and it’ll take washing my face and putting on a new layer of skincare to “wake it up”. While doing this celery juice cleanse, my skin was brighter and almost glowing as soon as I’d wake up.

What’s next…

When I stopped drinking celery juice every morning (during my trip to LA) my skin went back to it’s normal self, which is why I’m going to continue drinking the juice every morning! I will say it’s not a pleasant drink when the celery is bitter so buy it in smaller stocks. I think it’ll take a while for me to properly tie it into my daily routine, especially when I’m away, but it’ll be worth it.

How to Prevent Sugar Cravings

I’ve got a sweet tooth, there’s no doubt about that. It probably comes from my Dad’s genetics and most of the time I’m OK with it, except for when I’m trying to tone up and eat healthier.

My sweet tooth is what gets me in trouble whenever I try to “diet”. Whether I’m trying to get in shape for an upcoming vacation or simply burn off holiday calories, I always need to work extra hard to prevent my sugar cravings.

So today I thought we’d chat about how these cravings can actually be prevented! It’s always harder in the first week of cutting out sugar, but after that it’s usually smooth sailing. I actually find that after about 3-5 days of not eating sugar I no longer crave it or feel like I need it after a meal!

Tip #1 Drink Lemon Water

Throughout the day I find that lemon water helps to curb any sugar cravings I might have. It’s different for everyone but it’s been proven to keep blood sugar levels down and the pectin fibre in lemons actually helps fight cravings.

#2 Cut Out ALL Sugar

The type of sugar I’m talking about is processed sugar. In your coffee, tea, cookies, ice creams and even some sauces! I’ve tried the “eat in moderation” bit and it does NOT work nearly as well as cutting it ALL out does. It sucks for a few days but once your cravings are gone, they’re usually gone for good.

#3 Eat enough during your meals.

If you finish a meal feeling unfulfilled then you’re obviously going to want something sweet afterwards. By eating until you’re full (not overly full) you have a better chance of avoiding dessert.

This is what works for me but I want to know what works for you! Do you have any tips on how to stop sugar cravings?

3 Healthy Ice Cream Recipes

If there’s anyone that has an unhealthy obsession with ice cream, it’s me. I think my sweet tooth runs in the family….and ice cream is one of my top dessert choices, my favourite being gelato mmm! I actually used to work at an ice cream shop, it was my very first job and I made ice cream from scratch as well as ice cream cakes! It was kind of like a free for all with the ice cream and there was a point that I realized I had gained close to 10lbs because of it LOL. Thankfully I don’t work there anymore, but to cater to my ice cream obsession I’ve found some healthy ice cream recipes that I can make at home. The images in this post are the banana Nutella ice cream that I recently made (PS. It was delicious!).

#1 Nutella Frozen Yogourt

Ingredients

  • 2 cups yogurt of choice
  • 2/3 cup nutella
  • 1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract (don’t use if you’re using vanilla yogourt)
  • 1/4 tsp or less of salt
  • 1/4 cup cacao or cocoa powder
  • pinch pure stevia OR 1/3 cup
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • optional chocolate chips

Blend all ingredients, except the chocolate chips, until completely smooth. Freeze the mixture in ice cube trays and then re-blend (including chocolate chips) using an electric blender. Or you can transfer the blended mixture to an airtight container, freeze, and stir well every hour for 3 hours.

#2 Coconut Ice Cream

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup canned coconut milk (use full fat canned coconut milk, not light)
  • 1/2 cup additional coconut milk OR milk of choice
  • 1/4 cup sweetener of choice, such as sugar or pure maple syrup
  • pinch stevia or 1 additional tbsp sweetener of choice
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Blend all ingredients, except the chocolate chips, until completely smooth. Freeze the mixture in ice cube trays and then re-blend (including chocolate chips) using an electric blender. Or you can transfer the blended mixture to an airtight container, freeze, and stir well every hour for 3 hours.

#3 Banana Ice Cream

Ingredients

  • 2-3 overripe, frozen bananas
  • 2-4 tbsp optional milk of choice (I like coconut milk)
  • pinch salt
  • Nutella (optional, but its amazing)

Start with bananas that are turning brown. Peel and cut into large pieces, then freeze in an airtight bag or container. Put 2-3 frozen bananas into a blender or food processor—add a pinch of salt and 2-4 tbsp milk of choice for smoother blending if desired. Blend until smooth!

Have you tried making your own ice cream before? If you have, please share the recipe below!
