Summer Fridays Review: Overtime Mask

I’m back with yet another face mask review, and once again it’s a trending Summer Fridays mask 😉 I wasn’t going to purchase this (like I said with the Jet Lag Mask as well), but I thought why not, it’s pumpkin scented, it’s fall and I do love a good mask LOL.

This mask has a different mission and benefits than the Jet Lag mask so I’ve shared a few more details about it below before we dive into the review!

Mask Goal: Exfoliate & Hydrate

Key Ingredients: Pumpkin, Apricot Seed Powder, Oat Kernel Protein, Vitamin E

How it’s supposed to work: This mask is supposed to gently rub off dead skin cells to smooth the skin’s surface and brighten the skin’s complexion.

I used this mask per the instructions written on the back to make sure that I got the best results. I cleansed my face with an everyday face wash, pat dried it and then applied a thick layer of the Overtime mask. I let it sit on my skin for about 10 minutes and then rinsed it off.

Applying it was easy and even though there are tiny exfoliating pieces, my sensitive skin had no negative reaction to it. It never once stung or irritated the skin, which is something that I was originally worried about! I think that the all natural ingredient list had something to do with how well it worked on my sensitive skin. It also smells delicious which is a huge bonus! My mom said it smelled like a “thanksgiving dessert” and I totally agree LOL.

After removing the mask my skin was left feeling baby smooth AND hydrated. Often with exfoliating masks my skin tends to feel dry afterwards, but not with this one. It felt truly renewed and fresh and I could visibly see how smooth it was too.

I applied my jet lag mask right after along with the rest of my skincare routine and the next morning my face was glowing and felt brand new. When applying makeup I could really tell the difference of having those dead skin cells removed, because my creamy products applied so much easier.

THE Mask for Exhausted Skin

The mask I’m about to share with you all has continuously left my skin plumped, hydrated and quite honestly, looking like a million bucks! It’s a product that truly lives up to all of its hype…it’s the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask.

Summer Fridays is an American brand founded by bloggers Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Gores. They’ve now successfully launched two masks, the Jet Lag Mask and the Overtime Mask and people are raving about them! I waited a couple of months after the launch of the Jet Lag mask to purchase it so that I could get a better sense of whether or not it was worth it, and let me tell you, it’s worth it. This mask visibly reduces the appearance of stressed out and tired skin so much that no one can tell if you only get 3 hours of sleep at night 😉

I find that I examine my under eyes a lot in the morning to see if I’ve actually had a good night’s rest, but now since using this mask, I might feel tired but I certainly don’t look it. It’s pretty magical if you ask me.

The best part about this mask though is that it’s Paraben, Synthetic Dye, Synthetic Fragrance, Sulfate and Cruelty Free! Plus it’s Vegan, AKA, everybody has the opportunity feel it’s amazing results.

My favourite way to use this mask is overnight and under my eyes. I apply a pretty thick layer of it to my under-eyes at the end of my skincare routine and I wake up looking like I’ve slept for two days straight. It’s now an essential in my routine and something that I’d recommend to a friend or a stranger. It de-puffs, hydrates, reduces darkness and really makes the skin glow. Even as a 10 minute face mask, this product proves itself worthy by leaving your skin radiant as ever.

I haven’t yet applied this as a primer under makeup, but when I do I’ll share how it goes! If you’ve tried it as a primer I would love to hear how it works!

The Best Products for Clogged Pores

Summer has been hitting us hard with the humidity lately, especially in Vancouver, which means that the quality of our air isn’t as great as it could be and our skin is suffering in one way or another. The skin issue that bugs me the most is clogged pores because one, they cause unwanted tiny bumps on my face and two, they’re the worst surface to put makeup on (specifically matte products and highlighters).

When I run into this skin concern I use two very specific products and they seem to work pretty well! The morning after I use them my existing blackheads are gone and almost completely closed and the pores that were so open before are barely visable. Note: I have combination skin, the oiler parts being between my brows, nose and chin which is where most of my blackheads appear.

The first step to unclogging my pores is using a Micellar water. This helps remove leftover makeup and bacteria as well as provides a deep cleanse for my skin. The one that I’ve been using non-stop lately is the Bioré Charcoal Cleansing Micellar Water. The charcoal actually helps to reduce oiliness so it’s a win-win for me! I simply apply this water to a cotton pad and wipe it all over my face. They say that you don’t need to rinse after using this product but I actually prefer to when I have more clogged pores than usual.

Next up I like to use pore strips on my nose because that’s where most of my blackheads reside. I’ve probably tried 10 different brands of nose pore strips by now but the Bioré ones have proven to work the best for me. I really like the Charcoal Pore Strips because again, they pull out excess oil.

After I complete these two steps I apply my regular skincare routine and try not to wear makeup for a couple days!

How to Achieve the Perfect Summer Tan

Summer is at its prime so there’s no better time to tan than now! If you’re looking to achieve that perfect glow-y tan, no sunburn or peeling involved, then I’m here to help you out. Sitting out in the sun can enhance the natural beauty of your skin but in the same amount of time, if done incorrectly, can leave you with some nasty blisters and peeling. Nobody wants that, so today I’m sharing how I achieve the perfect summertime glow and how I avoid those bad burns.

If you exfoliate your body, even with a simple scrub, your skin will be smooth and clean for a good tan. Dead skin on the surface of your body makes it easier for your tan to peel, especially if you get a sunburn! Try to exfoliate a day or two before you go out to tan.

Apply Sunscreen

Even if you don’t think you burn, applying sunscreen does more than just avoid redness! Sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful rays and can even prevent skin cancer. I like to apply one layer before any tanning oil just to be safe.

Use Hydrating Oils

When you’re choosing an oil to tan with, make sure that it’s hydrating because the sun really sucks out any moisture that your skin has. I really like the Bali Body tanning oils because of their hydration.

Use Dark Oils

I prefer to use dark oils because I feel that they give me a deeper tan. The one that I’ve been using lately is the Bali Body Cacao tanning oil. It’s hydrating, smells like cacao and results in the prettiest glow!

Moisturize Religiously

The real trick to keeping your tan locked in place is moisturizing. Right after you shower and wash off your sunscreen and oils make sure that you moisturize your skin with a good amount of cream. This prevents the skin from flaking and the tan from fading.

If you get a sunburn…

While I was in Mexico I actually got a minor sunburn on my nose and cheeks, but it disappeared within two days because of one thing, my La Mer Cool Gel Cream. I suggest investing in a cream that works beneath the skin to reduce redness and sensitivity because you’ll need it if you burn, even a little bit. I applied this cream to the tips of my shoulders as well because that’s where I tanned the darkest and I didn’t want to peel and it worked!

Product Review: La Mer Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream

I never thought that I would ever get to review or even put on a $315 face cream, but here I am ladies and gents and let me tell you, it feels luxurious. My skincare collection just went from a 7/10 to a 15/10 just because of this one product, hah!

The La Mer products have always been the type of skincare that I dreamed of owning, but last month I was reached out to for their Vancouver event and that’s how I got my hands on this product! Unfortunately I ended up having to go on a last minute work trip and missed the event, but a girlfriend of mine was able to snag my goodie bag anyway 😉

I’m so happy she did because otherwise I probably wouldn’t have been trying this cream for a few more years (aka when I could afford the luxury). Enough of my chatter though, let’s get into this review!

Texture & Feel

The first time that I applied this cream I put on way too much and quickly realized that a little goes a long way. The texture of the cream is silky smooth (no exaggeration here) and literally glides on and sinks into the skin. It’s also feather light which makes it great for daily wear under makeup.

In Combo with Makeup

I’ve only been wearing this cream in the daytime, both with and without makeup to really see how it works and benefits the skin. Without makeup it actually smooths the skins appearance and hydrates throughout the entire day. With makeup it creates an amazing canvas for BB cream, what I use daily, and doesn’t affect the oiliness of my skin. This is something that really impressed me, but I guess because it’s such a light gel cream, it works well with other products!

Benefits for the Skin

Since using this I have seen a change in my skin in terms of pores, glow and texture. The pores around and on my nose have visibly reduced in size creating a smoother appearance. Also, my skin feels much more hydrated and definitely looks like it, increasing my daily glow! 🙂

Thoughts on Price Point

I’m in no position to be spending $315 on a 2oz container of moisturizer but if I were I honestly think that this might be worth the money! In under a week I’ve already seen how well the cream works so I’m sure that using it long term would really show great results. Not to mention, the ingredients that are used in this product are fermented which is pretty impressive and I’m sure it adds to the price point.

Have you babes tried any of the La Mer products? I would love to know what your faves are if you have! Comment your thoughts below 🙂

5 Ways to Keep Your Makeup Looking Fresh All Day

With summer approaching very quickly I think it’s about time that we figure out how to keep our makeup looking fresh all day. Especially through high humidities and scorching temperatures that try to melt it off! I personally already have very oily skin so in combination with heat my makeup tends to move all over the place, unless I’m consistent in touching it up throughout the day.

Here is what I do throughout the day to keep my makeup looking fresh…

1.Exfoliate 1-2 times a week to keep a clean canvas for my makeup.

Exfoliating gets rid of dead and unnecessary skin on the surface of your face and creates a clean canvas for you to apply your makeup.

2. Wear waterproof makeup.

I like to wear waterproof mascara in warmer weather because it stays on much longer and doesn’t smudge. My favourite one is “Lights, Camera Splashes” from Tarte!

3. Apply a face primer.

Primer is meant to help keep your makeup on so what better time is there to use it than in the summer?! Make sure to choose one that’s right for your skin conditions or else the primer could end up being useless!

4. BB Cream over foundation.

Less is always more in heat and even though I don’t wear foundation I know that using something lighter like a BB Cream in the heat is better, both for your skin and longevity of your makeup.

5. Use Blotting Sheets or Pressed Mineral Powder.

I always keep either oil blotting sheets or pressed powder in my purse to touchup those oily spots (usually my T-zone and chin) throughout the day. Blotting sheets are better because they don’t result in a caked look like some powders do but they can also pull off any makeup you have on, so pick your poison! 😉

What do you do to keep your makeup looking fresh all day?

My Skincare Routine for Blemishes

If you follow me on Instagram you may have already seen through video how I treat my skin when problems start arising, but today I want to share the routine in a little more detail.

I’m blessed to be able to say that I don’t have skin problems very often and when I do they’re most likely caused by stress and hormones (that time of the month). Unfortunately this past week has been super busy for me, AKA insanely stressful for various reasons, and my skin has broken out more than ever before. I’m seeing pimples form out of no where and the bumps on my face are increasing like crazy.

I’ve also been wearing makeup almost everyday (a simple BB cream, concealer and mascara) so that probably hasn’t been helping to fix the problem. However, it was only this morning when I actually had time to look in the mirror for a good amount of time that I realized what was happening on my face!! I didn’t freak, I just told myself I’d have a nice self-care skin sesh before bed and drink lots of water. Which is exactly what I did! Here’s what it included…

Step 1: Steam Face with a Hot Facecloth

This step is always really important when I’m trying to get rid of blackheads because it opens up the pores and makes it easier to remove them.

Step 2: Blackhead Removal with Tool

I use a blackhead removal tool from Sephora to squeeze out any obvious blackheads that are causing bumps in my skin. These little guys are a pain in the butt even with makeup on top!

Step 3: Blackhead Removal with Charcoal

I use the Biore Nose Pore Strips and a no-name brand charcoal peel-off mask (shop a similar one here) to further remove any blackheads that I couldn’t get out myself. I don’t do this very often, not even once a week because it tends to dry out the skin. I apply the mask only to the areas that are prone to developing blackheads to prevent dehydration.

Step 4: Unblemish Clarifying Toner

This is the toner that I use every single night because it works to tighten and clear out your pores. I usually use a cotton pad to apply but it can also be applied by patting the product onto the skin with your hands.

Step 5: Unblemish Dual Intensive Acne Treatment

I will never use any another acne treatment because this product has proven to me time and time again how well it actually works. It has two pumps, one is application lotion and the other is Benzyl Peroxide Lotion. They’re separate because when mixed together in one bottle they don’t work as well as when they’re first combined (science stuff, idk). I apply this to all of the areas where I’m experiencing acne and blackheads and I never actually have to pop any of my pimples. This stuff gets rid of the acne and bumps before they turn white and pop-able.

Step 6: Image Skincare Vital-C Hydrating Overnight Mask

I recently got this mask from an Image Skincare Launch Event and the hydration it provides for my skin is unreal!! It’s not an every night mask, more like 1-2 times a week, but it totally revitalizes your face and you wake up feeling like a brand new person, seriously. It has a deliciously refreshing citrus scent and has a jelly like consistency which makes it cool to the touch and very smooth to apply. I tried to find the link to this product but it may not be online yet so follow me on Insta (@haleyestradaa) for updates! 🙂

Step 7: Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

This eye cream is a little thicker than my usual ones but it really hydrates the under eyes and reduces puffiness and dark circles. Plus it has avocado, duh, what a trendy eye cream! 😉

Step 8: Lip Care

If my lips are extremely chapped I’ll apply a Lip Renewing Serum but otherwise I usually go for one of my other favourite lip products. You can find the list in my last post here.

I hope this post was helpful for those of you with similar skin issues! I love sharing these routines with you guys because I think it’s important to show the not so pretty parts of my life and how I deal with each situation. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below babes!

A Guide to Perfect Brows

Eyebrows can be very tricky to deal with but because they’re such a prominent part of our faces they’re one of those things that you should be taking care of! They can make or break your entire look and anyone who’s had a bad experience at a brow salon can tell you exactly what it feels like. Yikes!

Although we don’t all have the exact same brow shapes, thicknesses or colour, there are certain things we could all be doing to make sure our brows are always “on point”! These are simple daily tasks that result in YOUR own perfect brows.

  1. Trim! Whether you get them threaded, waxed or none of the above, keeping the inner parts of your brows trimmed helps to keep them looking fresh and well-kept.
  2. Use a growth enhancer. This one is up to you but I know that as a gal with thinner eyebrow hairs getting volume from product alone is difficult, so I turn to my eyebrow enhancer at night. It’s a quick and easy application and applies like mascara, but to your brows of course. It helps them grow longer and thicker! The enhancer that I’m currently using is from Hello Hair; you can shop it here.
  3. Brush them out daily. Just like your hair your eyebrows should be brushed out, with a spooly, at least once a day. This will keep them growing in their natural form and it keeps them looking clean and feathery.
  4. Keep a tweezer handy. Unless you never get your brows done, keeping a tweezer handy is very helpful to get rid of those random strays!
  5. Use highlighter. Highlighting the arch under your brow accentuates their shape and  easily makes your eyes look bigger too! My favourite highlighter right now is the Watts Up cream highlighter by Benefit. Shop it here.
  6. Visit a professional. Did you know that eyebrow hairs are the slowest growing hairs on your body? Try to visit a professional threader/waxer to fix the shape of your brows because if you try it yourself and screw up then it’ll be a long four months or more until they grow back. They may not even grow back the same….so be careful!

Lip Products That I Can’t Live Without

Chapped lips are the worst, agreed? They feel horrible, don’t look so great and often result in countless dollars being spent on any chapstick you come across. So….buy no more! Below are my favourite solutions for chapped lips. They are literally the lip products that I can’t live without because they do wonders to plump, hydrate and smooth, and who doesn’t need that?

A few things that I look for when I’m trying out new lip products are…

  1. Longevity. How long do they actually last on my lips before having to reapply?
  2. Stickiness. No one likes a sticky lip balm or serum…
  3. Application. I prefer not to stick my fingers in a tin of lip balm so I always try to find tube versions!

#1 Rodan+Fields Lip Renewing Serum

I think this will always be my favourite lip product because of how well it works. This serum truly plumps your lips and renews their moisture from any state. Put this on completely chapped lips overnight and you’ll wake up with what seem to be brand new lips! This is also an anti-aging product that works to reduce fine lines and the plump-ness that you get after using it is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Shop here.

#2 Image Skincare Ormedic Balancing Lip Enhancement Complex

Wow that’s a mouthful! I recently started using this lip enhancement in the sheer pink shade and I have to say that it gives the nicest plump and glossy look! Not only that but it provides really good hydration throughout the day and doesn’t need to be re-applied often. Shop here.

#3 Vaseline Lip Therapy Advance Healing Lip Balm

I found these little guys when I was in Hawaii and I was SO excited that I bought 3! LOL. Over the years Vaseline has solved many, many of my chapped lip problems but always hated having to carry around a tin that required me to use my fingers for application. Until I found this version!! It’s easy to carry around, applies super smooth and works well underneath lippies! Shop here.

#4 Revlon Kiss Exfoliating Balm

This sugar mint scrub is such an enjoyable pick-me-up for the lips! The soothing sweet mint flavour exfoliates your lips resulting in a smooth canvas for a colour application on top. I love that the sugar particles actually melt into your lips, especially when they’re cracked! I like to pair this with my Revlon Kiss SPF 20 Colour Balm in shade Berry Burst. Shop here.

#5 Lush Lip Scrub

If I’m looking for a quick fix on chapped lips before I apply a lipstick I love using the Lush Lip Scrubs! These scrubs really get rid of the dead skin and leave you with silky smooth lips. My favourite flavours are the Bubblegum and Honey! Shop here.

The Best Affordable Concealer

Although I’m not a full-face of makeup kind of gal, I do like to use concealer to cover up blemishes and marks on my face. I also aim to buy affordable products that I know I’ll be buying often, AKA, concealer. It took me a while to figure out which concealer was best for me and I went through tons of affordable to expensive products before finding the perfect one (which happened to only be under $15).

I’ve now been using the same concealer for 4 years and I can honestly say that it’s my favourite (even over the NARS creamy concealer, can you believe it?!?). This is literally the only concealer in my makeup drawer, and I’ve got two shades, one for my paler seasons and one for when I’m tanned 💁🏽‍♀️

I use concealer the most on my under eyes and on my chin where I have a couple dark spots that I’m trying to get rid of. Right on top of my concealer I put on a pressed powder from the same brand and the two together make a flawless complexion 🙌🏽 .

I don’t wear foundation so I can’t speak to how the concealer sits overtop of it but wearing it bare has worked very well for me! It’s buildable, just the right consistency and has great coverage. In addition, it’s oil free which is important to me because I’ve got naturally oily skin.

And the concealer is…..Drumroll please……Maybelline’s Fit Me Liquid Concealer!

Some of you may have tried this already but if you haven’t I highly recommend that you do!! Especially if you’re looking for a more affordable option 😉 (not sponsored or an ad, I just truly love this product).

I use the shade 25-Medium for my natural skin colour and shade 35-Deep for when I’m tanned. I use my fingers to do the primary blending of the concealer and then follow it with a beauty blender to get an extra natural look.

The pressed powder that I use on top of this concealer is the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Pressed Powder in shade 220 – Natural Beige. It takes away any natural shine that I have and it’s great for touching up throughout the day!

Have you guys tried either of these products? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! 💕
