Review: Almay One Coat Mega Volume Mascara

I recently received a complimentary Almay Mega Volume mascara from Influenster Canada to review, so here it is!

I naturally have long-ish eyelashes and they easily clump together so there are only a few types of mascara that work for me, unfortunately this wasn’t one of them. I was hoping that it would replace my current mascara since it’s running low, but it’s just not a product that I’d use every day and here’s why.

Volume: 9/10

I’ll give Almay credit for the volume part because it really does make your eyes pop and supposedly the shape of the brush helps with this. However I believe that any brush shape could do the same tricks that Almay suggests below:

  • For more volume, comb flat end of brush through lashes
  • For more drama, sweep outer lashes with flared brush end
  • For more definition, invert brush and pull upward

Brush Efficiency: 5/10

Let’s be real, it’s a brush and it does the job, just not very well. I understand what Almay was going for by creating a flared tip, but it’s just overly big! The gigantic brush was hard to use on my longer than most eyelashes, so imagine what it would be like applying to shorter ones. I found myself with more black marks on my eyelid than ever after using the brush.

Clump-Free: 2/10

This isn’t the worst mascara that I’ve ever had the opportunity to try, but it’s still pretty bad. Unless you’re used to clumpy eyelashes (more than one lash sticking together with mascara) then this might be an OK option for you. However I like to have feathery, non-clumpy, and natural looking eyelashes and this one just made me look like I’d just finished crying. Take a look below to see what I mean.

Formula and Fallout: 6/10

When they say “one coat” they really mean it! You don’t need much of this mascara to get a decent look, but obviously when you’re trying to fan them out and make them look better you’re applying more after all. That’s when it gets clumpy, so be careful. It’s not a horrible formula, it doesn’t smudge easily like some and it really doesn’t produce fallout when applying!

Longevity: 10/10

This is something that makes me want to use the product again because after wearing this for two days in a row (new application each morning obviously), I found that it didn’t produce fallout, didn’t smudge, and looked just as good at night as it did in the morning after applying.

This new mascara could do with a little brush makeover and maybe a change in formula but it’s about a 6.4/10 overall. If you’re looking for something that will give you volume then go ahead and try this one out. We could all have differing opinions so let me know yours in the comments below!
