2019 Spring Fashion Trends

It’s that time of year again to share all that 2019 has to offer in the fashion world! This Spring we’re going to be seeing some old and some new. From butterflies to powder blue, there’s lots to be excited for this year.

Each season comes with a set of trends that have repetitively walked the runways at fashion weeks all over the world. I’ve rounded up some of the most exciting trends down below. You should be seeing these styles roll into your local clothing stores very, very soon.

#1 Biker Shorts

This one isn’t news to us because we’ve been seeing them all over since Summer ’18. The biker short trend is here to stay. Personally I could never find a pair that fit super well and made me comfortable enough to wear out in public. But if you’ve got a pair already, there’s no need to shove them in the back of your closet anytime soon.

#2 Powder Blue

A big colour this Spring will be the gorgeous powdery, baby blue. I love this colour because it can be worn in so many different ways, from daytime to evening! Even if it’s just in the form of a silk scarf, this powder blue will definitely be an “it” colour on the street.

#3 One Shoulder Tops

Even though we’re a couple months out from being able to bare one shoulder, you can get excited now about all the cold shoulders you’ll be serving this Spring 😉

#4 Plastic

Here in Vancouver, we get rain until late May, so I’m happy about this Spring trend! Expect to see a lot of “plastic” coats and pants this upcoming season.

#5 Fringe

Although it’s not a personal favourite of mine, fringe will be back this Spring. I do have to say though, it was executed well on the runways last year!

#6 Tie Dye

Clearly it’s going to be a very colourful year! I cannot believe tie dye is back!! I know some people who are going to be very happy about this.

#7 Puff Shoulders

I’ll be honest, even though the puffed shoulder look is outrageous, I’m obsessed with it and even wear it myself. It doesn’t seem like something you’d wear for a day out in the city, but if styled correctly, it can look super chic. You’ll feel so stylish that you won’t even care that people are staring LOL.

#8 Print

Prints are in, but not just animal prints this time! This upcoming season we’ll be seeing a lot of different floral and geometric prints strut the streets.

Which trends are you excited for this Spring?

How Often You Should Get a Facial

How Often You Should Get a Facial

Many factors come into play when getting a facial; your skin type, conditions, age and budget. I am certainly not a derm or a professional in the skincare industry, but I have had my fair share of facials and I’ve been able to chat with a lot of different estheticians in the process. Therefore I wanted to share the knowledge I’ve learned from these skincare professionals!

If you’re already using a good selection of products in your skincare routine (not your average drugstore products) then your skin is probably in better condition than you think. Facials, however, are a fantastic way to give your skin a boost. After all, your skin is a living organ 😉

Without getting too scientific here I want to explain why facials are good for your skin. Basically the cells within your skin move up to the surface every 30 or so days and they “die”. These are those “dead skin cells” that your dermatologist and estheticians always talk about. So there you have it, every month you should be getting a facial!

There are other factors that will affect how often you should get a facial though, as I mentioned above. Your skin type (dry, oily, combo, sensitive, normal) will affect this. I personally have combination skin so I should be going every month, or maybe every 3 weeks because there is more to clear out in terms of blackheads and clogged pores. Dry and normal skin are totally fine to get facials every month or even every 5-6 weeks and people with sensitive skin might consider going less often to prevent reactions and irritation.

The type of facial you’re getting will also affect how often you should be going. There are many different types of facials out there; chemical peels, hydration facials, light therapy, etc. If you switch up the types of facials you’re getting then you may be able to go more often, or even wait longer between each one. Definitely ask your esthetician the next time you get one!

Lastly, age and budget will affect how often you should be getting facials. Younger people have an easier time generating new cells therefore we don’t need to go as often as people with less collagen growth. Budget is a huge factor because facials can get quite pricey and unless you’re purchasing bundle deals then they’ll add up quickly. I recommend doing your research on your local spas, even get a few consultations before booking.

If you have any tips on getting facials I’d love to hear them! Comment below if you have anything to share 🙂

How to Prevent Sugar Cravings

How to Prevent Sugar Cravings

I’ve got a sweet tooth, there’s no doubt about that. It probably comes from my Dad’s genetics and most of the time I’m OK with it, except for when I’m trying to tone up and eat healthier.

My sweet tooth is what gets me in trouble whenever I try to “diet”. Whether I’m trying to get in shape for an upcoming vacation or simply burn off holiday calories, I always need to work extra hard to prevent my sugar cravings.

So today I thought we’d chat about how these cravings can actually be prevented! It’s always harder in the first week of cutting out sugar, but after that it’s usually smooth sailing. I actually find that after about 3-5 days of not eating sugar I no longer crave it or feel like I need it after a meal!

Tip #1 Drink Lemon Water

Throughout the day I find that lemon water helps to curb any sugar cravings I might have. It’s different for everyone but it’s been proven to keep blood sugar levels down and the pectin fibre in lemons actually helps fight cravings.

#2 Cut Out ALL Sugar

The type of sugar I’m talking about is processed sugar. In your coffee, tea, cookies, ice creams and even some sauces! I’ve tried the “eat in moderation” bit and it does NOT work nearly as well as cutting it ALL out does. It sucks for a few days but once your cravings are gone, they’re usually gone for good.

#3 Eat enough during your meals.

If you finish a meal feeling unfulfilled then you’re obviously going to want something sweet afterwards. By eating until you’re full (not overly full) you have a better chance of avoiding dessert.

This is what works for me but I want to know what works for you! Do you have any tips on how to stop sugar cravings?

Acne Spot Treatments That Work

Acne Spot Treatments That Work

Lately I’ve been struggling with acne more often than usual. This is partly due to hormones and partly due to all of the sweets I consumed over the holidays. Either way, I’m paying for it now. So today I thought I’d share the acne spot treatments that actually work for me. This isn’t a list of “best reviewed” spot treatments, but rather a list of things that I’ve genuinely tried and can honestly say have helped get rid of my spots, or at least make them smaller.

I’ve never had severe acne so please keep this in mind while reading. I typically start to flare up in my chin area when it’s that time of the month, or when I’ve been eating too much junk food and sweets. And if you know me at all, you know I love sweets. So I’d say I need spot treatment for at least one week out of every month.

My skincare routine never stays the same for longer than a month and although I switch up serums, cleansers and moisturizers from time to time, my acne spot treatment always remains the same. Once you find something that works, you gotta to stick with it. So here they are…

#1 Rodan & Fields – Unblemish Dual Intensive Acne Treatment

This has been my #1 since the day I laid eyes on it (November 2016), however it’s a tad pricey so I’ve been testing out other options in the meantime. This treatment helps overnight if I have a pimple that’s about to surface. It really helps to prevent it from enlarging and it dries it out pretty well too.

#2 The Body Shop – Tea Tree Oil

This is the product I’ve been using over the past week and I love it because it seriously dries out my spots overnight. If I need a quicker fix then this is my go-to spot treatment. I use a q-tip to apply a small amount on top of my pimples and they’re smaller and less red when I wake up.

If you thought the list would be longer then I apologize, but it is difficult finding acne spot treatments that genuinely work the way they’re supposed to! Next up on my list for review is the Mario Badescu drying lotion, I’ve heard great things about it. If you’ve tried it already I would love to hear your thoghts on it in the comment section below. Let’s kill this acne together!

The Blog Series: Fear of Failure

The Blog Series: Fear of Failure

A fear of failure is something that I constantly struggle with. Even if it’s over something very small, there’s always been a voice in my head telling me that I can’t do it, or that I shouldn’t because I might fail. Fear is one of the thieves of joy so today I’d like to share some of the things that help me overcome it.

This industry can get be pretty harmful to your mental health if your head is in the wrong space, because there is so much competition and comparison (unfortunately). One of the reasons we fear failure is because we compare ourselves to others. So if you want to read more on that topic click here.

White Knit Set from SSUMJ

Whether you’ve been blogging for a few years, a few months or just started, I hope that these tips will help you smother any ounce of fear you might have.

First we need to understand what “failure” really means in this context, so below I’ve listed a few of the things that I’ve personally feared over the past few years of my blogging journey.

1. I’ll never make enough money to support myself and continue doing what I love as a career.

2. I won’t get any brand deals this month/this year.

3. I won’t get the engagement I need to succeed on my platform.

4. I won’t feel inspired or creative tomorrow.

5. People won’t like the content I create and it’ll show in my numbers.

That got really personal and honestly sharing those things was a little outside of my comfort zone but if it’s going to help you then I’m happy to share! But that’s step one, writing down every fear, no matter how small you may have and be thinking.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

For some reason, writing down thoughts on a piece of paper or even typed out on a document brings them out of our heads and into reality. It makes them easier to understand and overcome. However, they’re not there to look back on every single day, that’s probably not a great idea.

Step two is to figure out how fear holds you back or affects your life. This is like a self-reflection and will help you in preventing those negative kickbacks of your fear. Maybe you procrastinate when you’re scared or you hold yourself back from starting something you want to do (ahem, blogging, IG or YouTube). Whatever it is, write it down.

I’ve also commonly seen bloggers create something, a YouTube video for example, edit it and finish it and then not post it because they feel it’s “not good enough” or “not up to their standards”. I’ve seen this way too much recently! If you put in the hard work and effort you should be able to post it without an ounce of fear. The reality is that you are your worst critic and no one else will see the “flaws” of your work like you do, or even at all.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Step three is to make a game plan on how you will combat those negative fears of failure whenever they pop into your head. Below is a list of ways you can do this!

1. Positive thinking. It’s easier said than done but it is possible. This has been a huge goal of mine for a few months now but let me tell you, it really works. When one negative thought pops into my head I basically have a conversation with myself (in my head LOL) and tell myself to cut it out. I think of positive outcomes rather than negative ones.

2. Create a Plan B. If you’re really so scared of failing, just make sure you’ve got a backup! Then you won’t be stuck if you do actually fail and you’ll also feel more confident making the decision. But hey, failing is not a bad thing so don’t be too hard on yourself if plan B becomes plan A.

3. Analyze the possible outcomes. Often we fear the unknown and what’s on the other side of making a big decision, so analyzing all of the possible outcomes will paint a picture of the worst case scenario! It may even put your mind at ease knowing that the “unknown” is now known and written down.

I hope these things help you overcome your fears of failure and if you ever feel like chatting about this topic more I’m always available through DM on Instagram or through the comments 🙂

4 Product Natural Makeup Routine

4 Product Natural Makeup Routine

New year, new….makeup routine? 😉 Since I always seem to be trying out new makeup products I thought I’d share my current natural makeup routine with you! I’m always on the hunt for products that make my skin feel good while looking good and all of the products below do this.

A natural look comes easy when you’re using amazing products, and they don’t always have to cost an arm and a leg! On those days where I’m feeling blah and I just want an effortless look, these are the three things I immediately gravitate towards.

#1 Dior BACKSTAGE Face & Body Foundation – Colour 4 Warm Olive

My boyfriend got this for me this Christmas because I’d said I wanted to try it after seeing so many raving reviews! I can happily say that this foundation lives up to its name. Even without a primer beneath it it stays on all day/night and gives off the smoothest glowy look. It’s also very light but build-able so you don’t need much product for a natural look!

Screen Shot 2019-01-01 at 5.00.25 PM.png

#2 Glossier Boy Brow – Brown

I love a feathered, full and natural brow and the Glossier Boy Brow makes this look possible with two strokes of the brush. This will forever be my favourite brow filler out there. When I use this product I don’t add anything else to my brows because its also build-able and can give a thicker look depending on how many layers you apply.

#3 Lilah B. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek Tint

A two in one product always catches my eye and this divine duo from Lilah B. is the definition of convenient! I use the shade “b. lovely beige” as a blush and lip tint. Since the product is quite small it’s easy to carry around during the day for touch ups!

#4 Chanel Healthy Glow Sheer Powder – No30

If I need to tone down the shine on my face I use this sheer powder from Chanel. This is one of the best powders I own (definitely reflective in the price) because it truly makes your skin so smooth and can be layered without looking cakey.

These are my four go-to natural look products, do you have any others to recommend?

What 2018 Taught Me

What 2018 Taught Me

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you were all able to celebrate NYE in your favourite way last night!

As the new year quickly started approaching this past weekend, I found myself constantly reflecting on 2018; the good, the bad and the ugly. So today I’d like to share some of the things last year taught me.

Some of them will sound silly to you because maybe you’ve already learned these things on your own journey but each of these things stood out to me this year. Whether it was through a good or bad experience, travel, or having to let something go, this is what 2018 taught me…

  1. Communication is everything in a relationship and the way I communicate with others will affect any outcome. Communicating in a positive, calm and caring nature is always best.
  2. Faith is important. My faith in my abilities and my faith in God were tested this year in multiple ways and I’ve come out of it understanding that faith is absolutely necessary, in the good times and the bad.
  3. Material things only promise temporary happiness. There were points this year where I felt like I had everything I needed materially and when that that happened  I started to really focus more on what truly matters; family, friends, love and happiness. These are the blessings that keep on giving.
  4. Sticking true to your values makes you who you are. I met some people this year who had completely different views on human dignity and life values and at points I questioned my own thinking they weren’t “the norm”. I realize that everyone has their differences but sticking true to your values does make you who you are.
  5. Quality over quantity, always. This lesson was taught to me mainly through friendships this year.
  6. Life should not be rushed. Since I was little I’ve been a planner but this year taught me that not everything needs to run on a schedule. There should be room for uncertainty and spontaneity.
  7. When one door closes, another one always opens, but not always right away.
  8. There will always be something great on the other side of my comfort zone.
  9. Comparison is never positive. Self-belief conquers comparison to others.
  10. Relationships are not always smooth sailing. Yes we all think we know this when getting into a relationship, but until a relationship is tested you can’t truly understand it. I’ve learned that issues are best solved together and head on rather than left alone and “let go”. They’re never really let go..
  11. A caring helping hand will always work better than an ambitious and aggressive helping hand.
  12. How much money I make does NOT define me.
  13. Passions are meant to be pursued. I pursued mine in 2018 and I have no regrets. I hope everyone learns this lesson some day.
  14. I am always a work in progress. The best version of me will continue to be a work in progress until the day I die.
  15. Good things take time, sometimes a long time.
  16. Self care and pampering is not something to be ashamed of.
  17. It is difficult to love someone else if I do not love myself first. I only just realized this within the past few months actually.
  18. Traveling is a great way to open your mind and make changes.
  19. Working out for the feeling afterwards motivates me more than working out for a better appearance.
  20. Uncertainty is healthy and normal. There is no “book of life” that sets you on one straight path.

What’s something that 2018 taught you?

7 Ways to Start Off the New Year Right

7 Ways to Start Off the New Year Right

As cliché as it sounds, the New Year is certainly the right time to start working on those things you said you’d do a while back…and never did. It’s the best time to start fresh and focus on what’s really important in your life.

You probably already have a list of “goals for 2019” and that’s always a good thing, but you should definitely have a game plan as well! After all, you do want to check off those goals right?

Think of the new year as a new day. You don’t want to start your day off slowly and without a task-list! It’s always best to start the day with a clear mind, a clean workspace and a task list that will keep you going! So that’s what this post will help you do to start off 2019 the right way 🙂

#1 Clean up your home/workspace/bedroom.

Clutter is not welcome in 2019! Get rid of old papers, unwanted clothing, shoes and random items around your home and workspace.

#2 Get your budget straightened out.

Figure out and finalize your weekly and monthly budget! You’ll step into 2019 prepared and ready to take on those bank statements.

#3 Create a workout schedule.

If one of your goals is to live a healthier lifestyle or workout more often, be specific and make a proper schedule so it actually happens. Make sure you create your workout schedule before the New Year starts. This will prevent you from saying “I’ll start tomorrow”, “I’ll start next week”, and so on.

#4 Detox.

Another part of living a healthy lifestyle is eating well. Detoxing right before or during the start of the New Year will get you in the right mindset to better your eating habits. This could be a one week diet cutting out sugar and processed foods, or it could even be a juice cleanse!

#5 Do a yearly review.

This one is a little time consuming but will leave you feeling confident about your new year goals. Review the past year and figure out what worked and didn’t work for you, socially, personally, health-wise, work-wise, etc. Ask yourself some of these questions:

Why didn’t I reach (x) goal last year?

What did I cut out that made me happier?

How did I improve my health?

What went well for me last year?

How did I improve my relationships?

#6 Finish what you started.

I feel like we all have a to-do list in the back of our mind that never actually gets checked off. If you’ve got one of these and the tasks can be completed within one day or maybe even a few hours, dedicate one full day to them. These tasks are usually centered around the following:

  • house chores
  • repairs (home, clothing, shoes)
  • car (oil change, brake check, clean)
  • purge/donate unwanted items

#7 Create a list of daily habits.

Think of a few small tasks that you want to accomplish each day and keep the list handy. It could be drinking 2L of water per day, working out for 30 minutes, or even praying for 10 minutes every morning!

How will you be starting 2019 off right? What are some of your goals for the New Year?

The Blog Series: Time Management

The Blog Series: Time Management

One of the things that I get asked the most about is how I manage my time, so today I thought I’d share some of my suggestions with you! We all know how difficult time management can get, especially when you have a thousand things going on in your life 😉

Time management, in my opinion, is a constant work in progress. It doesn’t happen overnight and it takes effort to do properly. It’s all about efficiency and working smarter, not harder.

Whether you’re in school, working full time or a stay at home Mom, time management is something that applies to everyone. So although I refer to blogging in this post, these suggestions can definitely be applied elsewhere! Let’s get started!

Tip #1 – Work Smarter, Not Harder

In order to properly manage your time, you need to change your mindset. Working smarter, not harder is key! This means that you should focus on the IMPORTANT tasks, and stop wasting your time on tedious activities that just make you busy rather than productive.

Tip #2 – Trim Down Your To-Do List

When you write down your to-do lists, do you ever find that you can’t stop thinking of things to add to it? I’ve been there too, and trust me, it’s inefficient. Instead of writing a page long to-do list for ONE DAY, focus on 3-6 tasks for the day instead. Make sure these are critical tasks that challenge you. Honestly they’re probably the tasks that you don’t want to do!

We tend to add a ton of things to our to-do lists when we’re avoiding the actual activities that NEED to be done that day. I mean, do you really need to re-organize your bathroom drawers in the middle of a work day??? Save those types of tasks for the days that you’re not actually working!

An example of a fluff-less daily to-do list for me would be:

  • Write Sunday Blog Post “The Blog Series: Time Management”
  • Plan 3 outfits for Saturday Photo Shoot
  • Workout for 1hr
  • Film Thursday YouTube Video “Black Friday Shopping Haul”

Tip #3 – Be Specific With Yourself

Being prepared for a work day, especially in the content creation world, means knowing exactly what you need to do. Notice in my task list above that each activity has some sort of important detail attached to it. By being specific on my to-do list, I don’t waste any time brainstorming or trying to think of content ideas.

You will save time and energy if you are well prepared for your work day.

Tip #4 – Stick to a Routine

I’ve finally come to a point in my life where I have a pretty stable daily routine and it helps with productivity and efficiency. By having a set routine Monday to Friday, I’m able to grasp how much time I have to get my work done. It’s almost as if I go into auto-pilot mode because I’m so used to my daily activities! Below is an example of my daily routine:

  • 8am – Wake
  • 8:30am – Workout
  • 9:30am – Shower & Get ready for the day!
  • 10:30am-3:30pm – Work (blog posts, IG content, YouTube content, etc)
  • 4pm – Get ready for work! (I’m a P/T server as well)
  • 10:30/11pm – Sleep

Tip #5 – Stop Multitasking

I’ve mentioned this before and it is still true! Multitasking prevents us from giving our 100% to one task and it actually takes more time for us to get things done. If you’ve set out a chunk of time to write a blog post, don’t go scrolling through IG while you’re doing it. You’re confusing your brain and wasting time.

How do you manage your time?

My Top 5 Hydration Heroes

My Top 5 Hydration Heroes

We all know that winter time = dry skin and honestly it’s hard to find products that actually work to combat flakiness and rough texture. So today I’m sharing a few products that have been working really well for me as the temperatures start to decline.

As it starts to get colder in Vancouver, I can feel my skin getting dryer and dryer so I’m trying to make sure that I use as much hydrating product as  possible 24/7. I find that even if I skip one day of using my hydrating products, the moisture is just sucked out of my skin and I’m left feeling dull and dehydrated.

I use most of these products on a daily basis and some of them only a few times a week. If you’re having issues with dry skin then these could be the answers to your problems!

Image Skincare – Vital C Overnight Mask

This mask is something that I put on 2-4 times a week when my skin is feeling super parched. I love the way it smells (like freshly squeezed orange juice) and how it makes my skin feel upon application.

I apply a thick layer of this over-top of my toner and serum and wear it overnight. I wake up with super plump and glowing skin! Works every time 🙂

22261366801.jpg

Summer Friday’s Jet Lag Mask

This is another hydrating mask that I love and I’m sure you’re sick of me saying it because I rave about it too often 😉 I love this mask because it can be used whenever I want and in multiple ways.

The most hydrating way to use this in the winter (IMO) is to apply a thick layer of it on the face before sleeping. You can tell whether or not your skin is dehydrated by how fast it soaks in! I also love to use it as an under-eye mask overnight to prevent dark circles.

Jowaè Hydrating Water Mist

Whether I’ve just finished working out or need a spritz of hydration throughout the day, this water mist from Jowaè never lets me down. It’s one of the most hydrating mists I own and smells delightful! I’d carry this with me everywhere if the bottle wasn’t so big 😉

The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey Body Butter

If you follow me on Instagram then you know this is my favourite body lotion. The body butter from The Body Shop works miracles on dry skin. The Almond Milk & Honey one in particular is for sensitive skin so it’s especially great for the winter time.

I put this body butter on every single day after I shower and the moisture stays in my skin for over a day!

Marcelle Cosmetics Micellar Water for Dry Skin

During the winter I find that my skin feels the most dry when I remove my makeup and wash my face. Instead of my regular micellar water and face wash I’ve switched over to the Marcelle Dry Skin Micellar Water because it hydrates while removing makeup.

I like to use this at the end of the day before showering and also after a workout to remove any sweat!

mar_2018-03_eau_micellaire_dryskin_2000x2000.jpg

In addition to the use of these products I’m making it my daily goal to drink at least 2L of water everyday. Drinking water is extremely important to maintain healthy skin, especially because we consume so many hot, caffeinated drinks during this season!

If you have any hydrating products that are really working for you I would love to hear them below in the comments! I haven’t found a face moisturizer yet that truly leaves my skin feeling hydrated during the winter so I’d appreciate any recommendations you might have!
