The Blog Series: Getting Comfortable Infront of a Camera

The Blog Series: Getting Comfortable Infront of a Camera

It’s that time of month again and today I’m sharing how to get comfortable in front of a camera! If you’re a beginner blogger, Instagrammer or YouTuber then this post is for you. Getting comfortable in front of a camera can take a while, especially if it’s a brand new concept to you, but hopefully these tips and tricks will help you overcome your fears and nerves quicker.

It’s been just over two years now that I’ve been blogging, creating on Instagram and filming YouTube videos and these are the things that have helped me get comfortable in front of the lens. It’s been quite a journey and by looking back on my older videos and images I can tell that I’ve changed quite a bit since I started. Growth is good! It’s not always fun to see previous versions of yourself, but that’s how you know you’ve progressed πŸ˜‰

#1 Practice makes perfect.

To start off this list I just have to say that the more you get in front of a camera, the more comfortable you will become. In the beginning of my blogging career I would only be in front of the camera every few weeks, and fast forward to today I’m shooting and filming almost every single day! It takes time to become your true self in front of the lens and that’s okay!

#2 Stick to your good side and poses.

It sounds easy but once you’re in front of the camera you sometimes freeze up and forget. The best way to remember your best angles, sides and poses are to practice in the mirror. Do your poses and take selfie-style images on your phone so that you can look back on them right before a photo shoot.

This isn’t as applicable for filming videos because those focus more on talking rather than posing. For sitting in front of a video camera I would suggest talking to the camera as if you were talking to your best friend. After all, the best way to gain an audience is with authenticity and if you’re trying to be someone you’re not then it shows quite easily. In my earlier YouTube videos I could tell so obviously that I was trying to talk in a way that just wasn’t me. Thankfully I’ve gotten over that by now!

#3 Shoot with the same person.

One of the best ways to get comfortable doing photo shoots is by having the same person consistently shoot you. By having the same person take photos of you, you’ll have a better chance of getting comfortable. You could even ask your photographer, whether it’s a professional or your best friend, direct your poses into something that looks good from their end!

#4 Prepare properly for photo shoots.

One of the worst feelings when doing a photo shoot is feeling grumpy, hungry and ugly. Those three things seem to happen when I don’t eat beforehand, haven’t mentally prepared and haven’t visualized or conceptualized before walking into the shoot. Before you get in front of the camera try the following things to prepare:

  • eat a hearty meal (or a smaller one and bring snacks with you)
  • listen to some upbeat music to get yourself in the mood
  • create a vision board for your outfits and poses
  • look through your Pinterest boards for inspiration

If you have any more tips for getting comfortable in front of the camera please share them below! πŸ™‚ I hope the ones I’ve listed help you out. Happy shooting!

My Experience with Body Contouring

My Experience with Body Contouring

Over the past few months I’ve been going to The Skin Girls (TSG) for body contouring and I feel that this post is long overdue! Many of you have asked me questions about it on IG, so I want to share everything I can with you in this post. If you still have questions after reading this you can always comment below or DM me on IG!

Area Contoured: UPPER ARMS

The reason I chose to get my arms contoured is because it’s always been a stubborn fat part on my body and something that I was always insecure about. We all have idealistic images of our own bodies and no matter what I did or ate, my arms just wouldn’t tone down the way I wanted them to. I knew that with a healthy diet and consistent working out, this treatment would pay off and get me the results I wanted.

How it works…

BodyFX is a form of body contouring that permanently reduces fat and tightens your skin. In simple terms, it basically zaps your fat with heat. I’ll leave the technical explanation for the pros. The machine that TSG uses heats up to 42 degrees Celsius, which is the temperature that fat melts at.

How it feels…

I’m not going to lie and say that this procedure is painless because it depends on your pain tolerance. For me, the procedure on my arms burns for very short periods of time when the machine heats up to its highest temperature, but after the treatment I feel normal and don’t experience any sort of pain.

In regards to how your skin looks after, depending on your skin type there may be bruise-like marks where the area has been heated and suctioned. Since I naturally bruise easily, I always leave with red marks and over the next few days after treatment they begin to turn purple. But they do not hurt. These marks last up to a week and a half for me. Some people don’t experience any marks at all, it really depends.

What it costs…

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with The Skin Girls so the treatments I’ve had done were complimentary. Body Contouring at TSG costs $299CAD/session plus tax. Before you gasp at the price, average costs for this type of treatment are usually around $599CAD and from the results I’ve experienced, I would certainly pay for this treatment myself.

Did it really work…

After my very first session of Body Contouring at TSG I couldn’t immediately see results because of the red marks and also because it takes up to 4 weeks for the fat to dissolve. After about two weeks I noticed that my arms had toned down a bit. They say that each session typically lowers your fat percentage by 5%. Now after three sessions I can see a huge difference from before the treatment (pictured below). I’ll update this post a few weeks after the session I have today to show you my final results. I’m happy with the way my arms look now and am no longer insecure about them, so I think my 4th session will be my last.

IMG_5991.JPG
TOP: AFTER 3 SESSIONS BOTTOM: BEFORE TREATMENT

In addition to getting these treatments done I have been watching what I eat, not crazy dieting, but eating in moderation and working out consistently. I believe that working out 5-6 times a week has really helped to maintain the fat loss and tone down my arms. The bulkier parts of my arms, the upper shoulder area, are mainly muscle now which is what my goal was in the first place! If you’re looking to slim down your arms and you workout, don’t expect to get stick-thin results as muscle plays a huge role in their appearance.

If you have any questions feel free to comment below! If you’re local and are interested in visiting The Skin Girls you can get 10% off services by mentioning my name “HALEY10”.

My Current Skincare Routine: AM & PM

My Current Skincare Routine: AM & PM

As you know, my skincare routine changes almost every month and over the past few weeks I’ve been on a routine that has done wonders for my face. A couple of the products I’ve been using are newer to me, but they truly work and I’m super happy with my results. My newer products are from The Body Shop’s “Drops of Youth” line. I was introduced to this line about mid-January and have been using them day and night ever since.

A skincare routine for me consists of serums, moisturizers, eye creams, lip products and face wash. Since I have combination skin, it’s often difficult to find a balance between all of those products and find something that works for every part of my face. Luckily with the products I’m using now, my skin is looking and feeling amazing.

A routine that works for me tightens my pores, rids my blackheads, keeps my skin feeling hydrated, prevents breakouts and improves the texture (smoothness) all around. Enough of the chit chat though, below are the products I’m using and loving.

Morning Routine

Face Wash: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser

Serum: Alumier MD EverActive C&E Serum

Moisturizer: Drops of Youth, Youth Cream

Sunscreen: Coola Sun Silk Drops (SPF 30)

Evening Routine

Face Wash: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser

Serum: Drops of Youth, Youth Concentrate

Moisturizer: Drops of Youth, Youth Cream

Eye Cream: Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

Lips: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

None of the content in this post is sponsored however products were gifted to me a while back. Most of the skincare I use is gifted, and that’s only because I hate to waste what I receive! When I recommend products, I genuinely am using them and loving them. These are the ones that are on heavy rotation atm.

My Everyday Gold Jewelry

My Everyday Gold Jewelry

Jewelry is something that I don’t talk about very much on here, but wear every single day. It’s one of the accessories that I cannot go a day without wearing! I stick to very minimal and simple pieces and I love gold over silver. I always get asked where I get my jewelry from on IG so today I thought I’d go over my “everyday” pieces and link them so you can shop!

Earrings

I don’t like leaving the house with naked ears, and if there’s one type of jewelry that I’m going to wear on a “lazy” day it’s earrings! Depending on my outfit and mood I like to wear a variety of ear pieces. From statement earrings to studs, these are the pieces I always gravitate towards when getting ready.

Necklaces

I seldom wear necklaces, but when I do, I like to layer! Layering is the perfect trick to get away with a dainty and bold look. All of my necklaces are dainty, besides a couple pendants and since they’re all gold they go really well together. These ones below are my top picks at the moment.

Rings

I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing rings, I love them so much! I used to be a one or two ring type of girl, but now I like to go all out and deck out both hands with jewelry. Most of the rings I wear have a special meaning to me. These are my go-to’s.

Bracelets

Out of all of my jewelry I find myself wearing bracelets the least, but that might just be because it’s winter and my wrists are covered most of the time. I do however have a couple bracelets that I love to put on for a date night or fancy event!

You can get a 10% discount on some of these pieces by shopping through my link here. I will earn a small commission if you end up purchasing. But like I said, it’s very small πŸ™‚ Happy Shopping!

2019 Spring Fashion Trends

2019 Spring Fashion Trends

It’s that time of year again to share all that 2019 has to offer in the fashion world! This Spring we’re going to be seeing some old and some new. From butterflies to powder blue, there’s lots to be excited for this year.

Each season comes with a set of trends that have repetitively walked the runways at fashion weeks all over the world. I’ve rounded up some of the most exciting trends down below. You should be seeing these styles roll into your local clothing stores very, very soon.

#1 Biker Shorts

This one isn’t news to us because we’ve been seeing them all over since Summer ’18. The biker short trend is here to stay. Personally I could never find a pair that fit super well and made me comfortable enough to wear out in public. But if you’ve got a pair already, there’s no need to shove them in the back of your closet anytime soon.

#2 Powder Blue

A big colour this Spring will be the gorgeous powdery, baby blue. I love this colour because it can be worn in so many different ways, from daytime to evening! Even if it’s just in the form of a silk scarf, this powder blue will definitely be an “it” colour on the street.

#3 One Shoulder Tops

Even though we’re a couple months out from being able to bare one shoulder, you can get excited now about all the cold shoulders you’ll be serving this Spring πŸ˜‰

#4 Plastic

Here in Vancouver, we get rain until late May, so I’m happy about this Spring trend! Expect to see a lot of “plastic” coats and pants this upcoming season.

#5 Fringe

Although it’s not a personal favourite of mine, fringe will be back this Spring. I do have to say though, it was executed well on the runways last year!

#6 Tie Dye

Clearly it’s going to be a very colourful year! I cannot believe tie dye is back!! I know some people who are going to be very happy about this.

#7 Puff Shoulders

I’ll be honest, even though the puffed shoulder look is outrageous, I’m obsessed with it and even wear it myself. It doesn’t seem like something you’d wear for a day out in the city, but if styled correctly, it can look super chic. You’ll feel so stylish that you won’t even care that people are staring LOL.

#8 Print

Prints are in, but not just animal prints this time! This upcoming season we’ll be seeing a lot of different floral and geometric prints strut the streets.

Which trends are you excited for this Spring?

How Often You Should Get a Facial

How Often You Should Get a Facial

Many factors come into play when getting a facial; your skin type, conditions, age and budget. I am certainly not a derm or a professional in the skincare industry, but I have had my fair share of facials and I’ve been able to chat with a lot of different estheticians in the process. Therefore I wanted to share the knowledge I’ve learned from these skincare professionals!

If you’re already using a good selection of products in your skincare routine (not your average drugstore products) then your skin is probably in better condition than you think. Facials, however, are a fantastic way to give your skin a boost. After all, your skin is a living organ πŸ˜‰

Without getting too scientific here I want to explain why facials are good for your skin. Basically the cells within your skin move up to the surface every 30 or so days and they “die”. These are those “dead skin cells” that your dermatologist and estheticians always talk about. So there you have it, every month you should be getting a facial!

There are other factors that will affect how often you should get a facial though, as I mentioned above. Your skin type (dry, oily, combo, sensitive, normal) will affect this. I personally have combination skin so I should be going every month, or maybe every 3 weeks because there is more to clear out in terms of blackheads and clogged pores. Dry and normal skin are totally fine to get facials every month or even every 5-6 weeks and people with sensitive skin might consider going less often to prevent reactions and irritation.

The type of facial you’re getting will also affect how often you should be going. There are many different types of facials out there; chemical peels, hydration facials, light therapy, etc. If you switch up the types of facials you’re getting then you may be able to go more often, or even wait longer between each one. Definitely ask your esthetician the next time you get one!

Lastly, age and budget will affect how often you should be getting facials. Younger people have an easier time generating new cells therefore we don’t need to go as often as people with less collagen growth. Budget is a huge factor because facials can get quite pricey and unless you’re purchasing bundle deals then they’ll add up quickly. I recommend doing your research on your local spas, even get a few consultations before booking.

If you have any tips on getting facials I’d love to hear them! Comment below if you have anything to share πŸ™‚

How to Prevent Sugar Cravings

How to Prevent Sugar Cravings

I’ve got a sweet tooth, there’s no doubt about that. It probably comes from my Dad’s genetics and most of the time I’m OK with it, except for when I’m trying to tone up and eat healthier.

My sweet tooth is what gets me in trouble whenever I try to “diet”. Whether I’m trying to get in shape for an upcoming vacation or simply burn off holiday calories, I always need to work extra hard to prevent my sugar cravings.

So today I thought we’d chat about how these cravings can actually be prevented! It’s always harder in the first week of cutting out sugar, but after that it’s usually smooth sailing. I actually find that after about 3-5 days of not eating sugar I no longer crave it or feel like I need it after a meal!

Tip #1 Drink Lemon Water

Throughout the day I find that lemon water helps to curb any sugar cravings I might have. It’s different for everyone but it’s been proven to keep blood sugar levels down and the pectin fibre in lemons actually helps fight cravings.

#2 Cut Out ALL Sugar

The type of sugar I’m talking about is processed sugar. In your coffee, tea, cookies, ice creams and even some sauces! I’ve tried the “eat in moderation” bit and it does NOT work nearly as well as cutting it ALL out does. It sucks for a few days but once your cravings are gone, they’re usually gone for good.

#3 Eat enough during your meals.

If you finish a meal feeling unfulfilled then you’re obviously going to want something sweet afterwards. By eating until you’re full (not overly full) you have a better chance of avoiding dessert.

This is what works for me but I want to know what works for you! Do you have any tips on how to stop sugar cravings?

Acne Spot Treatments That Work

Acne Spot Treatments That Work

Lately I’ve been struggling with acne more often than usual. This is partly due to hormones and partly due to all of the sweets I consumed over the holidays. Either way, I’m paying for it now. So today I thought I’d share the acne spot treatments that actually work for me. This isn’t a list of “best reviewed” spot treatments, but rather a list of things that I’ve genuinely tried and can honestly say have helped get rid of my spots, or at least make them smaller.

I’ve never had severe acne so please keep this in mind while reading. I typically start to flare up in my chin area when it’s that time of the month, or when I’ve been eating too much junk food and sweets. And if you know me at all, you know I love sweets. So I’d say I need spot treatment for at least one week out of every month.

My skincare routine never stays the same for longer than a month and although I switch up serums, cleansers and moisturizers from time to time, my acne spot treatment always remains the same. Once you find something that works, you gotta to stick with it. So here they are…

#1 Rodan & Fields – Unblemish Dual Intensive Acne Treatment

This has been my #1 since the day I laid eyes on it (November 2016), however it’s a tad pricey so I’ve been testing out other options in the meantime. This treatment helps overnight if I have a pimple that’s about to surface. It really helps to prevent it from enlarging and it dries it out pretty well too.

#2 The Body Shop – Tea Tree Oil

This is the product I’ve been using over the past week and I love it because it seriously dries out my spots overnight. If I need a quicker fix then this is my go-to spot treatment. I use a q-tip to apply a small amount on top of my pimples and they’re smaller and less red when I wake up.

If you thought the list would be longer then I apologize, but it is difficult finding acne spot treatments that genuinely work the way they’re supposed to! Next up on my list for review is the Mario Badescu drying lotion, I’ve heard great things about it. If you’ve tried it already I would love to hear your thoghts on it in the comment section below. Let’s kill this acne together!

The Blog Series: Fear of Failure

The Blog Series: Fear of Failure

A fear of failure is something that I constantly struggle with. Even if it’s over something very small, there’s always been a voice in my head telling me that I can’t do it, or that I shouldn’t because I might fail. Fear is one of the thieves of joy so today I’d like to share some of the things that help me overcome it.

This industry can get be pretty harmful to your mental health if your head is in the wrong space, because there is so much competition and comparison (unfortunately). One of the reasons we fear failure is because we compare ourselves to others. So if you want to read more on that topic click here.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset
White Knit Set from SSUMJ

Whether you’ve been blogging for a few years, a few months or just started, I hope that these tips will help you smother any ounce of fear you might have.

First we need to understand what “failure” really means in this context, so below I’ve listed a few of the things that I’ve personally feared over the past few years of my blogging journey.

1. I’ll never make enough money to support myself and continue doing what I love as a career.

2. I won’t get any brand deals this month/this year.

3. I won’t get the engagement I need to succeed on my platform.

4. I won’t feel inspired or creative tomorrow.

5. People won’t like the content I create and it’ll show in my numbers.

That got really personal and honestly sharing those things was a little outside of my comfort zone but if it’s going to help you then I’m happy to share! But that’s step one, writing down every fear, no matter how small you may have and be thinking.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

For some reason, writing down thoughts on a piece of paper or even typed out on a document brings them out of our heads and into reality. It makes them easier to understand and overcome. However, they’re not there to look back on every single day, that’s probably not a great idea.

Step two is to figure out how fear holds you back or affects your life. This is like a self-reflection and will help you in preventing those negative kickbacks of your fear. Maybe you procrastinate when you’re scared or you hold yourself back from starting something you want to do (ahem, blogging, IG or YouTube). Whatever it is, write it down.

I’ve also commonly seen bloggers create something, a YouTube video for example, edit it and finish it and then not post it because they feel it’s “not good enough” or “not up to their standards”. I’ve seen this way too much recently! If you put in the hard work and effort you should be able to post it without an ounce of fear. The reality is that you are your worst critic and no one else will see the “flaws” of your work like you do, or even at all.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Step three is to make a game plan on how you will combat those negative fears of failure whenever they pop into your head. Below is a list of ways you can do this!

1. Positive thinking. It’s easier said than done but it is possible. This has been a huge goal of mine for a few months now but let me tell you, it really works. When one negative thought pops into my head I basically have a conversation with myself (in my head LOL) and tell myself to cut it out. I think of positive outcomes rather than negative ones.

2. Create a Plan B. If you’re really so scared of failing, just make sure you’ve got a backup! Then you won’t be stuck if you do actually fail and you’ll also feel more confident making the decision. But hey, failing is not a bad thing so don’t be too hard on yourself if plan B becomes plan A.

3. Analyze the possible outcomes. Often we fear the unknown and what’s on the other side of making a big decision, so analyzing all of the possible outcomes will paint a picture of the worst case scenario! It may even put your mind at ease knowing that the “unknown” is now known and written down.

I hope these things help you overcome your fears of failure and if you ever feel like chatting about this topic more I’m always available through DM on Instagram or through the comments πŸ™‚

4 Product Natural Makeup Routine

4 Product Natural Makeup Routine

New year, new….makeup routine? πŸ˜‰ Since I always seem to be trying out new makeup products I thought I’d share my current natural makeup routine with you! I’m always on the hunt for products that make my skin feel good while looking good and all of the products below do this.

A natural look comes easy when you’re using amazing products, and they don’t always have to cost an arm and a leg! On those days where I’m feeling blah and I just want an effortless look, these are the three things I immediately gravitate towards.

#1 Dior BACKSTAGE Face & Body Foundation – Colour 4 Warm Olive

My boyfriend got this for me this Christmas because I’d said I wanted to try it after seeing so many raving reviews! I can happily say that this foundation lives up to its name. Even without a primer beneath it it stays on all day/night and gives off the smoothest glowy look. It’s also very light but build-able so you don’t need much product for a natural look!

Screen Shot 2019-01-01 at 5.00.25 PM.png

#2 Glossier Boy Brow – Brown

I love a feathered, full and natural brow and the Glossier Boy Brow makes this look possible with two strokes of the brush. This will forever be my favourite brow filler out there. When I use this product I don’t add anything else to my brows because its also build-able and can give a thicker look depending on how many layers you apply.

BoyBrow_Carousel_02.jpg

#3 Lilah B. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek Tint

A two in one product always catches my eye and this divine duo from Lilah B. is the definition of convenient! I use the shade “b. lovely beige” as a blush and lip tint. Since the product is quite small it’s easy to carry around during the day for touch ups!

Screen Shot 2019-01-01 at 5.00.46 PM.png

#4 Chanel Healthy Glow Sheer Powder – No30

If I need to tone down the shine on my face I use this sheer powder from Chanel. This is one of the best powders I own (definitely reflective in the price) because it truly makes your skin so smooth and can be layered without looking cakey.

These are my four go-to natural look products, do you have any others to recommend?
